Info
At PIK, researchers in the natural and social sciences from all over the world work closely together to study global change and its impacts on ecological, economic and social systems. Researchers examine the earth system's capacity for withstanding human interventions and devise strategies and options for a sustainable development of humankind and nature. Interdisciplinary and solution-oriented approaches are a distinctive characteristic of the institute.

🌍 Our planet is in critical condition, showing signs of unhealth, manifested as droughts, fires, heatwaves, floods, storms. Cure requires diagnostics. Check out PIK director Johan Rockström's article in TIME on how a #PlanetaryHealthCheck can pave the way for meaningful change and a sustainable future. "The only way to keep them safe for humanity is by combining local action and national regulation with collective global governance." 👇 https://lnkd.in/eU_u-uGJ #PlanetaryBoundaries (Image designed by Globaïa) Planetary Guardians

🆕 study: Climate change and #inequality are deeply intertwined. Keeping global temperatures below 1.5°C can reduce long-term inequality increase by 2/3, researchers from CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, MCC Berlin, PIK & others show. They found robust evidence that well-designed policies can help stabilize climate and promote economic inclusion. Link to the study: https://lnkd.in/dyqgTXJe

“If we want our children to inherit a relatively stable planet then we must do everything in our power to keep fossil fuels in the ground and transform our agriculture and forestry. Today.“ Johan Rockström, PIK director, and Sandrine Dixson-Declève, co-president of the Club of Rome, comment on the outcome of the UN’s #SummitfortheFuture. Despite international agreements, the world is on a worrying trajectory, with six of nine planetary boundaries being transgressed and a seventh on the verge. They emphasize the need for rapid, far-reaching, systemic changes. They suggest first steps of a transformative agenda: 1) Declare a planetary and human emergency 2) U.N. Security Council’s recognising this fact and reconfiguring its veto power 3) Build a high-ambition coalition of nations to establish new international norms aligned with scientific realities and grounded in principles of social justice 4) Strengthen international participatory processes Read their full comment here: https://lnkd.in/daUc8USG #ClimateChange #ClimateChance #JohanRockström #SystemTransformation #SystemChange

🌊 Open Call for Ocean Experts: Contribute to the Planetary Boundary Framework The PBScience team at PIK invites scientists with substantial experience in ocean sciences to submit their ideas for advancing the role of ocean processes in the Planetary Boundary framework. The Planetary Boundary framework identifies nine Earth system processes essential for the planet to remain stable and resilient. It aims to define and quantify human impacts and set thresholds to keep Earth in a ‘Holocene-like’ state. How should ocean functions and processes be represented in the framework? What methods are best suited for identifying the global threshold and uncertainty range of the proposed marine control variable? 📅 Submit your ideas by 30th November 2024 https://lnkd.in/eaiRAhrm #PlanetaryBoundaries #OceanScience #EarthSystems #CallForIdeas #OpenCall

🎧 Jetzt reinhören! https://lnkd.in/eC4r4Ha8 #ClimateChange #ClimateChance #Wohlstand #Wachstum #Klimaschutz #Nachhaltigkeit #TableToday #Umwelt #Klimagerechtigkeit

Agriculture is responsible for 12% of the EU’s total emissions, with two-thirds coming from meat and dairy production. Europe might miss its climate goals unless farming emissions are cut down, states Ottmar Edenhofer, PIK director. While other industries are making progress, farming is one of the few areas that hasn’t faced strict climate regulations yet. Edenhofer believes that introducing a carbon tax on agriculture might be crucial to push for change. As Europe, the fastest-warming continent, faces more frequent extreme weather, the need for strong policy decisions is becoming more urgent, writes Financial Times.
