This week, #Fairfax County became the center of gravity for #quantum as more than 1,000 pioneers, visionaries and innovators from 30 countries converged in #Tysons for the third annual Quantum World Congress. As Dr. #VilhelmBohr was recounting his great grandfather and Nobel Laureate #NielsBohr’s profound legacy to science at the opening reception of #QWC2024, you couldn’t help but feel that we are all truly standing on the shoulders of giants. In just three short years, incredible advancements have been made from research to commercialization and workforce development to prepare the world for the quantum future. For example, leaders from Microsoft and Quantinuum announced groundbreaking advancements in quantum computing and its integration with #AI. Together, they have achieved the most reliable 12 logical qubits on record, marking a huge leap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. This collaboration is fueling a new age of scientific innovation, with hybrid applications set to transform fields like chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science. Impact the world.” Formed in 2017, Peraton’s service areas include space, intelligence, cyber, defense, homeland security, citizen security, and health. Peraton’s name is a construct of the prefix per, which means thoroughly, and the word imperative, reflecting the importance of its customers’ missions. “Peraton is a next-generation national security company. We handle missions that matter, what we call missions of consequence,” said Rebecca McHale, Peraton’s chief human resources officer. “We cover all domains: land, air, space, digital, with all sorts of exciting and interesting missions.” Peraton opened its new national and regional headquarters in Reston Town Center in October 2022. This week our Fairfax County Economic Development Authority team and Northern Virginia Economic Development Alliance partners have been connecting with hundreds of international companies at SelectUSA, and the value proposition of Northern Virginia as THE premier entry point to the U.S. market continues to build momentum. Our team works with more than 400 foreign-owned companies from across the globe that call Fairfax County their U.S. home base. But today, our focus is on the impacts of the transatlantic economy in particular. The $8.7 trillion transatlantic economy employs more than 16 million workers in mutually on-shored jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. Ties are particularly strong in #FDI, portfolio investment, banking claims, trade and affiliate sales in goods and services, digital links, energy, mutual R&D investment, patent cooperation, technology flows, and sales of knowledge-intensive services. The transatlantic economy has special effects on #Virginia in general and Northern Virginia in particular. Six of the ten largest foreign investors in Northern Virginia are from Europe (the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands). Together, these six countries invest approximately $4 billion into 570 foreign-owned establishments creating approximately 30,000 jobs – predominantly in the science, technical services and information sectors. While primarily known as the tech hub of the East Coast, Fairfax County offers a unique combination of assets that make it a magnet for companies of all sizes with space-related operations.
