The Capital Area Food Bank hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 26 to formally unveil a larger, modernized distribution facility in the Lorton area of Fairfax County. The expanded distribution center will enable the food bank to better address the rising rates of hunger across the Greater Washington region. “I worked directly with the Capital Area Food Bank to keep them in Fairfax County, and I’m delighted to see them expanding in Lorton," said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay. "This brand-new facility gives them the ability to not just meet existing demands but expand their services to match the growing needs of Northern Virginia.” “This new, expanded facility comes at a critical time, when hunger on the rise in Northern Virginia and across our region,” said Radha Muthiah, president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank. “This larger distribution center will make a profound difference in ensuring that thousands of Northern Virginians can access nutritious food. We’re grateful for the support of those who made this larger distribution center possible, enabling us to serve our neighbors effectively both today and into the future.” The new 43,000 square-foot distribution center builds upon the presence that the food bank has had in Northern Virginia for the last 35 years. The facility is roughly 3.5 times larger than the previous building, which was torn down last year to rebuild on the same site. The added size and upgraded technology now allow CAFB to distribute more than twice the amount of food in Northern Virginia, including more fresh produce and frozen protein. The expansion also provides more space for CAFB’s partner nonprofits, and enables the food bank to offer volunteering opportunities in Northern Virginia for the first time. 🔗: https://hubs.li/Q02RDzC60

This week, #Fairfax County became the center of gravity for #quantum as more than 1,000 pioneers, visionaries and innovators from 30 countries converged in #Tysons for the third annual Quantum World Congress. As Dr. #VilhelmBohr was recounting his great grandfather and Nobel Laureate #NielsBohr’s profound legacy to science at the opening reception of #QWC2024, you couldn’t help but feel that we are all truly standing on the shoulders of giants. In just three short years, incredible advancements have been made from research to commercialization and workforce development to prepare the world for the quantum future. For example, leaders from Microsoft and Quantinuum announced groundbreaking advancements in quantum computing and its integration with #AI. Together, they have achieved the most reliable 12 logical qubits on record, marking a huge leap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. This collaboration is fueling a new age of scientific innovation, with hybrid applications set to transform fields like chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science.   It is a great honor to be recognized on the 2024 Virginia Business Power 500 list. It is humbling to lead a team of professionals in Fairfax that care about the businesses and the community. We are excited and honored that United Airlines has chosen to locate their new, state-of-the-art training facility in Fairfax County. We look forward to continuing to support United in their growth journey as they ramp up their efforts to upskill, reskill and train the talent pool of the future.

Riverside Research will relocate its regionally-based business operations to Fairfax County in September 2024, as part of its strategy to centralize Northern Virginia operations and accommodate growth. This move will merge its current facility in Arlington with its Centreville office. “Our new, consolidated Fairfax location ensures close proximity to many of our government customers and underscores our ongoing commitment to innovation on behalf of the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community,” said Dr. Steven Omick, President and CEO of Riverside Research. The new, state-of-the-art 38,707-square-foot facility in Fairfax is strategically located to sustain the company’s proximity to key government contracting and business activities. The move to 12601 Fair Lakes Circle in Fairfax represents $14.7 million in lease dollars over the next decade, with a $7.5 million capital improvement investment from the company. The facility will house 55 high-tech jobs and $9.1 million in overall annual salary. Additionally, the company anticipates adding an estimated 60 new high-tech jobs to this office. ➡ https://lnkd.in/esuDpKGY
