The RCI supports the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.

Info

The aim of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials. RCI addresses the core problem of climate change, which is extracting and using additional fossil carbon from the ground that will eventually end up in the atmosphere. Companies are encouraged to focus on phasing out fossil resources and to use renewable carbon instead. The initiative wants to drive this message, initiating further actions by bringing stakeholders together, providing information and shaping policy to strive for a climate-neutral circular economy. Definition Renewable Carbon: Renewable Carbon entails all carbon sources that avoid or substitute the use of any additional fossil carbon from the geosphere. Renewable carbon can come from the biosphere, atmosphere or technosphere – but not from the geosphere. Renewable carbon circulates between biosphere, atmosphere or technosphere, creating a carbon circular economy.

Yesterday, the European Commission has unveiled its ambitious 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥 (CID), aiming to revitalise Europe's industries while promoting sustainability. As a supporter of the Antwerp Declaration, RCI had the privilege of attending the launch event in Antwerp. The Deal contains many elements significant to renewable carbon and the chemical industry: 🏭 The 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲-𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧-𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐬  ⚡ 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 to reduce costs of energy and electricity 🌱 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐔-𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧: a Circular Economy Act planned for 2026, an update of the Bioeconomy Strategy and a new Bioeconomy Act, and support for more CCU-based products, potentially via EU ETS 💶 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: €100 billion to be mobilised through a Industrial Decarbonisation Bank. The CID states: "𝘛𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘧𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘭 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘳𝘢𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘉𝘪𝘰-𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘣𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦" – and we could not agree more. This agreement is a decisive step towards a more sustainable and competitive European chemical industry. On to action! Further details are available in the official communication: https://lnkd.in/dqEa7CHm Thank you to Marco Mensink and the Cefic team for the great launch event! #RenewableCarbon #CleanIndustrialDeal #GreenChemistry #SustainableInnovation

  • 🌱𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬? 🌿 A key takeaway from our joint BIC/RCI project is a resounding "yes!“ – in a moderate high-tech scenario. In that context, it is important to emphasise that #biomass is not the only provider of #RenewableCarbon – carbon capture and recycling will also have to play significant roles to #defossilise the sector. Together with BIC and based on existing #netzero studies for the #ChemicalIndustry, we investigated whether 20% of the entire carbon demand by chemicals and derived materials in 2050 could be covered by biomass. 🌍 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬% 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 without compromising food, feed, and biofuel demands. This is a major leap from today's shares of 5.5% in the EU-27 and 10% globally. In Europe and globally, the supply of biogenic carbon will need to quadruple between now and 2050 to meet the anticipated demand. 💡 𝗕𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬, biomass used for chemical and derived materials will likely see a significant shift in composition: – 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗼-𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀: Remains the largest contributor and maximised use of by-products, but with a lower percentage than today. – 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: Will increasingly become significant raw material providers of resources for the chemical industry. 🔀 This diversification of bio-based feedstocks allows #sustainable growth while reducing reliance on fossil carbon, helping us hit that 20% target. Potentially, strong high-tech agricultural innovation could increase this even further up to 40%, but we prefer to stay within cautious boundaries. 💡 The picture is clear: biomass will have to play a critical role in the transition to a renewable carbon economy, and together with BIC we conclude that it also can.
