When it comes to creating growth in a sustainable way, it’s not only what you invest in, but how you invest it.
Om os
At Axcel, we believe that when it comes to creating growth in a sustainable way, it’s not only what you invest in, but how you invest it. With our strong focus on Nordic companies in the tech, business services & industrials, healthcare and consumer sectors, we create successes through a combination of our team’s network and experience paired with a systematic, growth-oriented value creation approach. Over the last 30 years, Axcel has raised seven funds with total committed capital of EUR 4.1 billion. We currently own 20 companies headquartered across the Nordics, having made a total of 71 platform investments, over 300 add-on acquisitions, and 51 exits. For us, finding a business where we know we can make a difference is just the beginning. Once we get excited about the opportunities we see, we go all-in to work with a business to unleash its full potential to create a positive impact – both for the company and society as a whole.

Meet Jan-Nicolas Garbe, new Partner at Axcel who is leading our entry into Germany. Originally from Hamburg and based in Frankfurt with his family, Jan-Nicolas joins us after 13 years at Cinven, where he played key roles in landmark deals such as STADA and TK Elevator. We caught up with him to hear his thoughts on bringing Axcel’s investment approach to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚? Two things stood out. First, the chance to build Axcel’s presence in DACH is a unique opportunity. I was impressed by Axcel’s 30-year track record in the Nordics and its success in executing exclusive transactions and driving consolidation in fragmented industries. Second, coming from large-cap, I’m excited to dive into the mid-market where I see more potential for unique investment opportunities, value creation and market outperformance. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧? My key priority is to establish Axcel’s long-term presence in Frankfurt. This includes building the right local team and cultivating relationships with mid-market businesses in the region, introducing them to Axcel’s partnership-driven approach. 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝘼𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙗𝙪𝙩𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙞𝙙-𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝘿𝘼𝘾𝙃? Axcel’s hands-on, collaborative approach is ideal for companies looking for more than financial investment. I see an opportunity to introduce a model where we partner with management to create lasting value, whether it’s expanding market reach, increasing operational efficiency, or enhancing brand reputation. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙚? The mid-market space here is competitive, so entering as a new player requires careful positioning and strong local networks. A key challenge will be building trust with local business owners who may not yet be familiar with Axcel. That’s exactly the kind of challenge that excites me. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪? Alongside my love for travel and sports, I enjoy learning about history and the evolution of global markets. Understanding how economic trends shape industries over time helps me keep a broader perspective in my work. Additionally, my family has a multi-cultural background, which I greatly value. I look forward to bringing the virtues of diversity into our new German setup. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜-𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙢 𝙜𝙤𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝘼𝙭𝙘𝙚𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙣? Long-term, I see Axcel as a leader in the DACH mid-market, recognised for its partnership-driven approach. Our vision includes building a portfolio of companies that are not only profitable but also exemplify best practices in governance, sustainability and innovation. A warm welcome to Jan-Nicolas to the Axcel team! #axcel #privateequity

We are pleased to announce a major milestone for Axcel as we expand beyond the Nordics with the opening of our first office in Frankfurt, Germany. Leading this next chapter is newly appointed Partner Jan-Nicolas Garbe, who joins us from a role as Senior Principal at Cinven, starting on 1 November. Building on three decades of success in the Nordics, we are establishing a dedicated investment team in Frankfurt to complement our offices in Copenhagen and Stockholm. The expansion allows us to capture mid-market investments across Germany, Austria and Switzerland while supporting the growth of our Nordic companies in these markets. "We’ve been investing in the DACH region for several years, supporting our portfolio companies through M&A activities. Now, we’re excited to establish a German office, enabling us to more effectively pursue investments in this region, bring our collaborative, Nordic-style approach to these markets and continue delivering lasting value to our investors. Jan-Nicolas’s extensive PE experience, leadership skills and network make him a strong fit to lead our efforts here, and we’re delighted to welcome him on board,” says Managing Partner at Axcel Christian Schmidt-Jacobsen. Meet Peter Thomsen, CEO of Vetopia🐾 Here, he discusses Vetopia's strong development, its unique approach to supporting vets and the future of the veterinary industry. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮? After spending my first 10,000 hours in the veterinary industry, I teamed up with Axcel in 2021 to create something different. We wanted to build a new kind of group, centred around the belief that a successful vet group should care for its people just as much as it cares for pets. In a very fragmented market, our goal was to unite clinics under this core principle. We began by bringing together Danish VetGruppen and Norwegian EMPET, and from there, Vetopia has grown steadily, expanding beyond the Nordics into the DACH region. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀? Vetopia was built with a clear purpose to support vets and nurses so they can focus fully on their passion – caring for pets. We give each clinic the freedom to make the best decisions for pets and owners without interference in medical choices. Instead, we invest in continuous learning and provide valuable group support. By giving clinic owners the chance to invest in Vetopia, we foster a spirit of ownership and community that’s hard to find elsewhere. 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘆 - 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁? Every time a clinic owner trusts us with his or her life's work, it’s a milestone. The first clinics in each country stand out to me – those owners took a leap of faith when Vetopia had no presence in their countries. Today, I’m proud we’ve earned that trust and built a leading group across seven countries, all while staying true to the promises we made. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? I grew up with dogs, and today we have two dogs, two cats, and the occasional dwarf hamster – we’ve also had a few horses. Like any pet owner, I can tell you that pets really are family. Having pets of my own helps me put myself in our customers' shoes and understand how important it is to have a highly qualified vet nearby, someone you trust and count on. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱? The veterinary field is always evolving – with new medical technologies, growing specialisation and a greater focus on work-life balance for vets. At Vetopia, we stay ahead by investing in a fulfilling work environment, medical excellence and continuous learning through our own training network. Our top priority is ensuring that everyone in our clinics thrives and is fully equipped to meet the evolving needs of pet owners. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁? We’ll keep building the best home for veterinary professionals! As we continue to expand, we’ll do so thoughtfully – balancing growth with our commitment to creating a supportive work environment.

Introducing Vetopia – a leading European veterinary group providing high-quality primary, specialised and emergency veterinary care services for small animals and horses. Vetopia’s mission? To be the best home for veterinary professionals, empowering them to deliver exceptional medical care to our pets.
