Om os
The Constructive Institute is an independent organisation that lies at the heart of the constructive journalism movement. Its mission is to combat trivialisation and degradation of journalism by emphasising reporting that is more accurate, balanced and solutions-focussed. The institute helps journalists and news organisations to apply constructive reporting in their daily work through providing access to an inspiring best practices portal, a world-class fellowship programme, relevant training curricula, and rigorous academic research. We work closely with University of Aarhus, a young and modern university that has grown to become a leading public research university with international reach.

Gogo.al visited some of the most important media outlets in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, seeing how they do constructive journalism. A more constructive approach, more solutions, more nuances, more audience involvement around them. An unforgettable tour at Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), SVT, Dagbladet Børsen, Politiken, Zetland etc. thanks to the excellent leading of Orla Borg and Ulrik Haagerup from the Constructive Institute. We as journalists always could be better at our job. #constructivejournalism #constructiveinstitute #scandinavia #denmark #norway #sweden

Leaving with hope in the luggage 30 Eastern European editors and reporters finished the circle of our constructive Scandinavian study tour today in Copenhagen. And after presenting them with great newsrooms having success with constructive journslism in Norway and Sweden, we were proud to show how also Danish news media succesfully embrace the ideas of alternatives to and gloom reporting and the traditional digital strategy of grabbing attention with fear, drama and conflict. Bjarne Corydon of Børsen, Amalie Kestler of Politiken and Lea Korsgaard provided great inspiration and hopeful insights to our new friends from the other end of Europe: It’s not only responsible and right to listen louder to user needs and provide trusted, passionate and solution focused storytelling. It’s also the recipe for profit, more satisfied news consumers and more satisfied news teams. As the editor from Georgian 1TV put it today: “I leave with hope in my luggage.” Thanks to our fantastic former fellows Ingrid Tinmannsvik, Katrine Grønvald Raun and Nanna Schelde for documenting how theory can be turned into change and new meaningful roads for journalism. Also respect to the partners of Constructive Institute on this inspirational project: European Commission, Transitions Media, Journalism Funders Forum, Nobel Peace Center, NRK Nyheter, SVT, Gapminder Foundation, Espen Egil Hansen and Solutions Journalism Network.

Swedish public service broadcaster SVT might be among the biggest, best and most constructive newsrooms at least in Northern Europe. Yesterday I humbly tried to help 600 reporters and editors include more hope, inspiration, engagement and perspectives into their news mix. Their passion, energy, currage and belief in trusted journalism will play a key role for the future of Sweden og public service. I met one of my long time journalism heros in Bruxelles the other day. Dr. Mark Lee Hunter was one of the founding fathers of investigative reporting: The much needed craft for the 4th Estate to keep people with power accountable. He was cleverly moderating a conference on climate reporting. on which I was speaking about a change in the narrative, mindset and toolbox for media. The conference, organized by Vattenfall turned out to have more than a milllion viewers online. And Imagine how proud I was, when Hunter from stage all of a sudden declared that he agreed with the ideas of constructive journalism as a needed supplement to investigative reporting to help society selfcorrect. “You’ve won that argument,” he said. “As important investigative journalism has been, its given that we cannot just expose the facts. We are also responsible for enabling a useful response to the facts. That’s what people like Ulrik Haagerup of the Constructive Institute has spent decades fighting for.” Thanks. #dkmedier #dkpol

Climate change is certainly humanity's defining challenge. A report by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) warns against “climate catastrophe journalism”, which contributes to climate anxiety and causes media users to stop engaging with news stories on the topic. We need fresh ways to report on the crisis, moving beyond fear to solutions and hope. Our Climate Explorer Program, which brought together climate journalists and scientists, shows how nuanced, forward-looking journalism can reimagine the climate beat and instil hope in readers that the future is worth caring about. We will be discussing this and more at our session - Climate Strategy for Newsrooms - at the News Impact Summit on October 10 in Copenhagen. Join us to get insights from Cynara Vetch, project lead and co-director of the Climate Explorer Program at Constructive Institute. You can also hear from Politiken’s Amalie Kestler and Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK)’s Ingrid Tinmannsvik about countering climate misinformation with a constructive lens. We’re excited to be partnering with European Journalism Centre (EJC) for this summit, where participants can connect with experts who are envisioning a new future for #climatejournalism. Journalism needs a new mindset, new tools and new formats. Which is why we are eagerly waiting for the European Solutions Journalism Summit in Prague on September 27 and 28. An ‘unconference’, the event will bring together many curious and passionate journalists and editors to discuss actionable ideas that rethink journalism. We can’t wait to share the results we have seen with constructive journalism and how hope is a strategy worth investing in. If you are at the summit, come say hi. If you can’t make it, watch this space to get an insider view into this insight-packed summit! I’m looking forward to speak at The Climate Communication Event in Bruxelles tomorrow on how Constructive Journalism is the tool for news media to maintain public focus on the biggest story of our time without the “bad news syndrome” kicking in or becomming activistic. But more interesting will most likely be talks from other media people, scientist, politicians and communication experts from all over the world - invited by Vattenfall. And yes, we can document that people click more on constructive climate stories. They spend more time on them. And trust the news provider more after reading inspirational, nuanced and engaging journalism. And yes, comms people have their role to play too - providing accurate information and not sales talk.
