Ever heard of an island becoming a “living laboratory” for climate solutions? 🏝️ Last week, we took an inspiring trip to Governors Island - a 172-acre former military base just a short, 10-minute ferry ride from Lower Manhattan. This site is set to be one of NYC’s climate hubs, following Mayor ERIC ADAMS’ $700 million initiative to transform the island as a hub for sustainable development, innovation, and as the headquarters for The New York Climate Exchange. Lauren Wang, Director of Climate Programs at Trust for Governors Island, shares more on this agenda: “Our mission at Trust for Governors Island includes working closely with partners to bring climate awareness to life, from hosting public programs during Earth Week and Climate Week to activating historic buildings as educational and office spaces, including for our anchor institution, the New York Climate Exchange. Together, these efforts are vital components of New York City's strategy to address the climate crisis." Through the Circular Economy Challenge, the non-profit organization also offers piloting opportunities for young climate tech companies to test and prototype their products and services here on the island. This visit offered a great chance to explore collaboration between Denmark and this ambitious project, especially for Danish companies interested in piloting climate solutions here. Companies like Danfoss and Energy Machines™ are already contributing to the development of the CUNY campus on the island, using it as a testing ground and an entry point into NYC’s complex procurement system. A big thank you to Director of Climate Programs, Lauren Wang, and Chief of Staff, Sarah Krautheim, from the Trust for Governors Island for showing us around. We’re excited to witness the island’s transformation into one of NYC’s green innovation hubs! #Governorsisland #DenmarkinNY #Circulareconomychallenge Lauren Wang | Sarah Krautheim | Victoria Cerullo | Neil Padukone | Helle Meinertz | Nikolaj Fredsted | Garette Johnson | Lisa Mallner | Maiken Tandgaard Derno | John Nguyen

🇪🇸 Thank you to Embajada de Dinamarca en España, Danfoss Spain, and BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group for a great visit at BIG HQ! At BIG in Copenhagen, near-surface geothermal energy is stored in the building’s foundation piles. These ‘energy piles,' by Centrum Pæle A/S, serve as the primary heat source in winter and cooling medium in summer. A heat pump efficiently transfers heat between the building and the foundation piles, delivering renewable, electric-powered heating and cooling with efficiencies 8-12 times greater than district heating and conventional HVAC systems. We met with a delegation from Spain’s construction, urban development, government, and sustainability sectors for a presentation and up-close look at the Energy Machines™ integrated energy system—a practical example of effective solutions for decarbonizing heating and cooling in Denmark and beyond. Together, we can accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. #Denmark #Spain #ClimateSolutions

🇩🇰 Geothermal energy storage is expanding in the Copenhagen region, where we're proud to have broken ground on four new projects! These projects - spanning residential, office, cultural, and manufacturing sectors - feature aquifer (ATES) and borehole (BTES) thermal energy storage systems that use the earth as a natural energy reservoir — akin to a battery for storing heat and cold. Constructing energy storage wells/boreholes is the first step in transforming buildings into highly efficient energy machines that reduce CO₂ emissions and minimize waste from heating and cooling operations. Thank you to Brøndboringsfirmaet Brøker A/S, Per Wessman, Team Wessman AB, and Varup Termiske Boringer Aps v. Jan Varup for the great drilling work across these sites! We look forward to the progress to come in the weeks ahead. #GeothermalEnergyStorage #Decarbonization #Denmark

“This isn’t magic or pie in the sky. It’s not new facilities worth billions with uncertain economics. This is heat pumps, and the first heat pump patent was filed in 1856. It’s geothermal energy, it’s heat that already exists. What’s innovative about us is the way we combine the technologies. There are no new inventions.” Nicolas Kastbjerg, our CEO, has been featured in an article discussing Energy Machines’ nomination for EjendomsWatch's Most Innovative Real Estate Company of the Year award. https://lnkd.in/dEm78Hc3 👆 Click here to access the full article and read about Energy Machines' innovative, proven approach to transforming energy in the real estate sector. Progress continues toward optimizing geothermal-based energy systems! Marta Munk Tønder and Stig Niemi Sørensen from Energy Machines' Technical Design Team recently returned from a visit to Vienna, where they participated in the latest consortium meeting with GOES project partners. Over three days, our research teams presented advancements in defining interfaces across four critical scales: urban, architecture, equipment, and underground. We are proud of our team's contributions, particularly in the development of automated design workflows for Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) systems, and their insights into the coupling of underground, equipment, and architecture scales. Thank you to AIT Austrian Institute of Technology for hosting the meeting, PORR Group for arranging a fantastic visit to their latest BTES construction site, and to our GOES partners for another productive and enjoyable visit. Together, we can accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy.
