ICARS pursues the achievement of its ambitious mission and vision of partnering with LMICs to mitigate AMR.
Om os
Imagine a world in which AMR no longer poses a threat to the health of humans and animals, the environment, global food security and economic prosperity. This is our vision at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions - ICARS. ICARS provides One Health intervention and implementation research support to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in their efforts to prevent and mitigate AMR. Through our activities, we enter into partnerships with LMICs to advance the implementation of their National Action Plans (NAPs). These partnerships involve projects through which we co-develop and test new solutions for AMR mitigation, translate existing evidence into action, all while supporting capacity and capability building in LMICs. Our work also extends to advocacy for the importance of Implementation Research as a means to deliver on the NAPs.

💡 To enhance long-term, sustainable interventions that mitigate antimicrobial resistance (#AMR), ICARS is launching a new Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop a comprehensive guide on ensuring sustainable impact of AMR solutions across human, animal, and environmental health sectors. 🌱 Achieving #Sustainability in AMR interventions means ensuring solutions continue to deliver positive outcomes long after projects end. This RFP invites proposals to create a resource guide that provides an array of methodologies to assess sustainability, measure outcomes, and support the integration of AMR solutions into policies and broader systems. From policy integration and capacity building to financial independence, sustainable impact is key to scaling AMR interventions effectively. 📅 Proposals are being accepted from research institutions based in Africa until November 15, 2024. 📋 With a budget of $150,000 and a 12-month timeline, this is an exciting opportunity for LMIC-based researchers to shape the future of sustainable AMR interventions. 🔗 For more details ➡️ https://bit.ly/3ZQL6lb

📚 Today's #MondayRead highlights how infection prevention and control (IPC) is key to addressing antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). This is especially important in LMICs, where strong IPC can transform resistance management with limited resources. 🏥 A decade-long study (2013-2022) at a large Dutch teaching hospital reveals valuable insights into managing extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E), a major challenge due to its antibiotic resistance. Key Takeaways: ▪️ Average ESBL-E prevalence over 10 years was 4.6%, with annual rates fluctuating between 2.1% and 6.6%. 📉 ▪️ Declining trend: A consistent decrease averaging 5.5% per year, with especially low levels in 2016 and 2020. ⏳ ▪️ Nosocomial transmission: Detected in only 5.9% of cases, with no transmissions in 2020, possibly linked to COVID-19 precautions. 🦠 ▪️ Continued decline: Even post-pandemic, 2021 and 2022 saw low prevalence, hinting at broader infection control successes. 🛡️ 💡 Why it matters: Ongoing surveillance and targeted infection control strategies are crucial to sustaining these gains and preventing antibiotic resistance in hospital settings. 🌍 What an honour to participate in the workshop on “Strengthening evidence, research, and action to address equity dimensions of antimicrobial resistance”! On Monday, I had the privilege of joining a panel on “Gaps and opportunities to strengthen generation and uptake of evidence and research on equity dimensions of AMR.” The following day we had great discussions on priority areas for addressing these critical equity dimensions within AMR. A heartfelt thank you to Victoria Saint and German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) for hosting us and creating such an engaging space for exchange. We were truly honoured to receive encouraging recorded messages from Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Dame Sally Davies encouraging us to continue action on AMR, gender, and equity. Looking forward to applying these insights and advancing equity and gender in AMR research and action. #AMR #Gender #Equity #GlobalHealth The International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS)

📚 Today's #MondayRead dives into the critical issue of antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) in livestock and its far-reaching consequences. 🌍 While the economic impact of antimicrobial use (AMU) remains unclear, understanding this burden is vital for both animal health and public welfare. 📊 A new conceptual framework using the Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) approach aims to clarify these challenges by identifying key data needs and pathways for assessing AMR's impact. 💡 Improved data collection on health expenditures and morbidity can guide effective interventions and policy development. 👏 G7 Health Ministers express support for the work of ICARS in their latest joint declaration. 🌎 Earlier this month, G7 Health Ministers met in Italy to discuss global challenges, including interconnected security, demographic, socio-economic and political issues, all of which are exacerbated by climate change. 📰 The meeting marked the adoption of a joint declaration, which amongst other themes, emphasised how the health of humans, animals, plants and ecosystems are interconnected and supported the implementation of a One Health Approach. ✅ In a section focused on antimicrobial resistance (#AMR), the declaration explicitly outlines support for the work of ICARS, as well as highlighting the role of infection, prevention and control (IPC) measures, vaccination programmes and #WASH initiatives in reducing the burden of infectious diseases. 📚 Today's #MondayRead is a report from the World Health Organization offering a detailed analysis of the role #vaccines play in reducing antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) and antibiotic use. It examines 44 vaccines targeting 24 pathogens, highlighting how vaccines can: 🔹 Reduce reliance on antibiotics 🔹 Prevent the spread of resistant strains 🔹 Lower economic costs associated with AMR 📊 By modelling potential outcomes, the report emphasises vaccines as a key component of AMR mitigation strategies at both national and global levels. 📅 ICARS recently participated in the Nordic–African Women’s Health Forum, which focused on improving health outcomes for women and children. 🤝 Ambassadors from Uganda (Amb. Margaret Otteskov), Kenya (Amb. Angeline Musili, MBS), Rwanda (Dr. Diane Gashumba), Zimbabwe (Amb. Priscila Misihairabwi), and Ghana (Amb. Sylvia Annoh) shared perspectives on joint efforts to combat cancer, enhance vaccination programs, improve maternal and child health, and address key health challenges. The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration in advancing women’s health across the continent. 💡 ICARS' Senior Science Advisor, Erica Westwood, presented on the intersections of Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR), gender, and equity in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (#LMICs). She highlighted how gender inequalities can limit access to healthcare and emphasized that women are disproportionately affected by drug-resistant infections. 🎤 Other speakers included: Ulla Elisabeth Muller (she/her/hers), Director, UNFPA Nordic Office Kelle Moley, VP, Ferring Pharmaceuticals Dr. Hauqing Li, CEO & Founder, Gynius Plus AB Florence Christensen, CEO & Founder, Connecting Nordic businesses to African markets 🙏 ICARS thanks the organizers, including Women African Ambassadors in Sweden, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and other partners for facilitating this important event.
