These women in Assam, India, are members of a very unusual defence force: the Hargilia Army. Wearing homemade paper-mache headdresses, their mission is to save the greater adjutant stork, known locally as ‘hargila’. Once found widely across South and Southeast Asia, today they are one of the world’s rarest storks, with global numbers down to 1200. This all-female eco army is led by biologist Purnima Barman (pictured in front), who believes that women are key to community-led conservation. So far she has rallied over 10,000 women to raise awareness about the ecological importance of this winged scavenger – traditionally reviled by locals as a bad omen – in a bid to bring the species back from the brink of extinction. This is a snippet from the latest volume of our magazine. It will be available from Monday, September 16! For reference, the air travel industry emits 2.5%. Where can you fit into the equation? We have many opportunities throughout our days to make a difference in the food waste problem. Our home kitchens are a great place to start. Our food choices can reflect our values and the world we want to live in. Luckily, you don’t need to start your food waste journey in the dark!
