New paper out from P1 affiliates Luca Maria Aiello and Michael Szell and their research team from IT-Universitetet i København! In this paper, they have proved that urban highways limit social connections in the 50 largest cities in the US. Read more about the research result here: https://lnkd.in/dCDda68n
"Urban Highways Are Barriers to Social Ties" out on PNAS! The first large-scale measure of how highways weaken social connections between the communities they separate. We found this barrier effect in all 50 largest US cities. The effect is especially strong at short distances (<5km), persists after controlling for sociodemographic factors and other barriers (e.g., rivers), and is consistent with historical cases of highways that were built to purposefully disrupt or isolate Black neighborhoods. Reducing social connectivity ultimately harms economic opportunities, in particular those of lower socioeconomic classes. Therefore, it is important to promote urban restorative initiatives such as the Reconnecting Communities Program by the US DoT (https://lnkd.in/dFjQRrac), recently discontinued by Trump. Last week I had the opportunity to attend #WACV2025 in beautiful Tucson! It was a great experience and I got to meet new people and catch up with friends from far away. On the first day of the conference, I presented our work, "AutoFish: Dataset and Benchmark for Fine-grained Analysis of Fish" in the #MaCVi workshop. The workshop brought together people from all over the world with an interest in maritime applications and I had many insightful discussions with everyone who came by our poster. 📌 Project website: https://lnkd.in/dEf8icdf A huge thank you to all co-authors: Stefan Hein Bengtson, Daniel Lehotsky, Niels Madsen, Professor Thomas Moeslund, Malte Pedersen
