🌍 Yesterday, important ambitions for Europe's green transition were confirmed as the European Union Industrial Carbon Management Strategy was unveiled. At Umwelt Energy, we want to recognize the importance of the ambitions presented and the implications they hold for our industry and beyond. With the ambitious target of capturing 450 million tonnes of CO2 per year and achieving carbon neutrality in the EU by 2050, along with a 90% emission cut by 2040, the stakes are high, requiring unwavering dedication and strategic planning. As we all work towards the goal of carbon neutrality, we find it imperative to underscore the critical role of carbon capture utilization (CCU) in the green transition. CCU has great momentum and offers unique opportunities to repurpose captured carbon, driving innovation and supporting the transition to sustainable practices for hard-to-abate sectors. Our CEO, Alexander Eriksen, comments on the unveiled Industrial Carbon Management Strategy: “It is encouraging to see this vision for CO2 management from the EU, where CCU, CCS, and general atmospheric removal form the three-legged plan for us to approach carbon neutrality by 2050. And we are now excited to see what concrete frameworks, initiatives, and investment opportunities the EU will put in place to make the plan a reality,” he says and continues, “Our contribution to reaching the goal is our commitment to championing CCU as a pivotal component of the green transition agenda.” At Umwelt Energy, we’re celebrating this EU milestone with determination in our work to help secure the future of industrial sustainability. #CarbonManagement #CCU #GreenTransition #Sustainability #UmweltEnergy

Umwelt Energy facilitates the green energy transition by developing power-to-eFuel projects that help hard-to-abate industries decarbonize. Founded by an international team with top-level experience and a strong track record of execution, Umwelt develops, builds and operates fully integrated, utility-scale eFuel projects that can operate both on grid and off. Our project platforms integrate renewable power generation, electrolysis plants for green hydrogen, and efuel synthesis plants for methanol, ammonia, kerosine and gasoline. Off-takers for our eFuel products will include maritime and aviation customers, while heavy industry players can abate their CO2 emissions using the green hydrogen we produce. At Umwelt Energy, we are committed to benefiting the communities where we operate. We create jobs, supply green electricity, and explore ways to provide clean water, heat and other services. We avoid building PV parks on good farmland, we are mindful of local water and grid constraints, and we source the captured CO2 we use for methanol synthesis from local industries – using biogenic CO2 where possible. Umwelt Energy is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, and we have projects under development in Europe and India, with the Americas as an additional near-term focus market.

🌐 Navigating Europe's PtX Challenges: Call for Unified Policies 🌱 Umwelt Energy's CEO, Alexander Eriksen, sheds light on the hurdles impeding Europe's PtX (Power-to-X) aspirations in his opinion piece in Danish business daily Finans. Despite Denmark's aim for 6 GW PtX production by 2030, projects face challenges such as green power shortages and hydrogen infrastructure uncertainties. The singular focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS) poses an obstacle, hindering the use of biogenic CO2 crucial for green fuel development. This issue extends beyond Denmark; it's a European concern jeopardizing our global green leadership. We therefore look forward to the launch of the EU Commission's Carbon Management Strategy expected in February, where we hope that CCU will receive greater focus and clearer framework conditions. Our call is clear: Provide clarity on CCU frameworks for PtX to truly become Europe's export triumph. 🚀💚 Read the entire opinion piece (in Danish) here. ⬇️ #PtX #Sustainability #UmweltEnergy #GreenInnovation 🌍🌱

Umwelt Energy is one of the founding members of the new Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI). Today we have committed to Denmark’s Green Fuels Alliance India (GFAI) initiative together with pioneering members: A.P. Moller - Maersk, Topsoe, MASH Makes, EUSUSO-Denmark (European Sustainable Solutions) ApS, Novozymes, Danfoss, Brdr. Christensen, Ikast A/S and Brintbranchen. The initiative is set out to boost collaborative efforts between Denmark and India in the sustainable energy solutions sector and advance our joint global goal towards net neutrality. The primary objective is to promote sustainable energy growth in India by establishing an ecosystem that encourages collaboration among businesses, government entities, research institutions, and financial stakeholders from both the Indian and Danish sectors. “The initiative is an important step in the right direction, since some of the key challenges in providing the eFuels that the world is desperately in need of to replace fossil fuels, are collaboration across governments, businesses, financial and research institutions,” said CEO Alexander Eriksen at Umwelt Energy. Umwelt Energy is already engaged in projects that will provide eMethanol to the heavy-duty transport sector in India. Let 2024 be the year for next-generation green fuel projects. This year has taken Umwelt Energy to three continents, even more projects, and maintained our unwavering belief in our abilities to change the world's fuel supply. The demand for green fuels is real. Investors, industry, and society want to increase the volume of green fuels so we can reduce the amount of CO2 emissions. 2023 has proven that the transition to green fuels gains momentum, but it has also shown that our regulation and framework conditions are struggling to keep up with the new technologies. In 2024, we wish for greater clarity on the framework for large-scale PtX projects and simpler rules for subsidies that will accelerate the development of green fuels. Most of all we are eager to share some good news about next-generation green fuels from India, Portugal, and North America. Stay tuned – Happy New Year! #innovation #energy #hydrogen

What will power Laura? The world’s first methanol-enabled container vessel Laura Mærsk marks the beginning of a new era for shipping. A.P. Moller - Maersk has 25 methanol-enabled container vessels on order for delivery, all capable of being powered by methanol. This order has been followed by other large companies such as CMA CGM, COSCO SHIPPING Lines and Cargill . Maersk’s new vessels will when completed require more than 1 million tonnes of bio or eMethanol each year, which is more than the current global production. At Umwelt Energy we are committed to reducing this gap so that Laura and other ships can navigate using green fuels in the near future. According to research center Lloyd's Register more than 1,200 vessel will demand bio or eMethanol in 2030 meaning that more than 13 % of all bunker consumption will be from green fuels. Today it’s less than 1 %. Umwelt Energy wants to contribute to this progress and is developing projects that can potentially support the production of over 1 million tonnes of green fuels on a yearly basis. #innovation #energy #hydrogen Photo Credit: Galen Crout / Unsplashed

It is encouraging that Morten Bødskov, Denmark's Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs, has announced that the Danish government will explore options for providing public funding to the green sector within the framework of the EU's Green Deal Industrial Plan. The government's 2030 roadmap already provides a clear indication of what measures the government can adopt: Denmark "may establish support schemes for establishing and upscaling production capacity within selected green technologies, such as wind technology and Power-to-X." This is an important first step if Denmark and Europe are to be leading players in the development of new green technologies, but it cannot stand alone. There is still a need for clearer framework conditions for developing green fuels, or else projects will continue to favour the US and Asia. #innovation #energy #hydrogen
