EU vision for agriculture: A step forward or a missed opportunity? Two weeks ago, the European Commission unveiled its Vision for Agriculture and Food, aiming to shape the future of EU farming. It acknowledges the need for climate action and fairer Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) payments. The CAP is the EU’s main funding mechanism for farmers, supporting income stability and rural development. However, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) criticises the vision for being vague and lacking clear commitments for sustainability, nutrient management, and fertiliser reduction. Key concerns raised by WWF: 🌱 CAP reform – No major shift in payment structures or stronger incentives for sustainability. 🐄 Sustainable livestock – Focuses on competitiveness but lacks bold policies to cut emissions and improve nutrient management. 💧 Water & pollution – Fails to strengthen efforts to reduce fertiliser and pesticide use, despite their impact on water quality. 🌾 Carbon farming – Proposed as a financing tool, but safeguards against greenwashing and double counting are missing. With discussions on the next CAP reform starting soon, the EU must move beyond vague commitments and ensure an impact-driven agricultural policy. The transition to a sustainable food system requires clear targets, stronger incentives, and meaningful action. 🚜♻️ 📖 Read WWF’s full analysis 👇 https://lnkd.in/eCazTHNN

Should Europe rethink its approach to agricultural innovation? The role of New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) in agriculture is a hotly debated topic. These techniques, which allow precise crop breeding, promise higher yields, reduced resource use, and enhanced crop resilience. But unlocking their full potential will require significant changes in Europe’s regulatory frameworks, argues Corteva Agriscience in an article published in The Parliament. The urgency is clear—climate change, resource scarcity, and rising food insecurity demand innovative solutions. However, as pointed out in the article, Europe risks falling behind other regions. The US and Argentina have already adopted more supportive regulatory systems. Yet, speeding up approvals should not mean bypassing necessary safeguards or ignoring broader environmental concerns. So, how do we strike the right balance between innovation and responsible governance? 👇 Read the article and share your thoughts

Getting our boots dirty – Day 2 of the NUTRI-KNOW general assembly! Our second day in Emilia-Romagna took us straight to the field, where we explored novel solutions for sustainable nutrient management. 📍 First stop: Colombaro – Pig Livestock Farm We visited the biogas plant and a manure treatment line featuring solid-liquid separation, flotation, and nitrogen removal through nitri-denitrification. A highlight was the Struvite prototype, which recovers phosphorus and nitrogen as struvite—a key step towards circular nutrient management! And yes, there was plenty of bubbling action! In the video below, you can see the fascinating (and slightly messy) process of transforming pig manure into valuable resources. It might not be glamorous, but it’s innovation in action! 🏭 Second stop: Modena - SCAM SPA Fertilizers Manufacturing Industry We toured the facilities of the Italian company SCAM, a leader in granular organo-mineral fertilisers boosted with humified matrix. The organo-mineral fertilisers have the Environmental Product Declaration. The company also produces water-soluble fertilisers for fertigation, liquid fertilisers and biostimulants—key inputs for improving soil health and boosting sustainable agriculture. A big thank you to our hosts for these insightful visits! These innovations show how circular approaches can help us optimise resources, reduce waste, and improve agricultural sustainability. 👉 Learn more about our project: nutri-know.eu 👉 Learn more about the Struvite Operational Group: https://lnkd.in/ep294akp #CircularEconomy #SustainableAgriculture #NutrientManagement #Innovation #SoilHealth Our consortium: Biogas-E, CRPA - Centro Ricerche Produzioni Animali , Water, Environment and Beyond (WE&B), BETA Technological Center, Federació de Cooperatives Agràries de Catalunya, Irish Organic Association, Ghent University, ESCI - European Science Communication Institute , Teagasc, Aarhus University, Departament d'Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació.
