🔵 #EPlenary debate on EU ocean protection today at 15h. While 90% of offshore #Natura2000 sites are bottom trawled, we urge MEPs to ask the European Commission to report progress on the #banbottomtrawling in MPAs target, and on the implementation of the #MarineActionPlan #EUOceanPact 🌊 🌍

Tomorrow, MEPs will debate ocean 🌊 protection in #EPplenary. Ongoing threats to EU #MarineProtectedAreas harm coastal communities and sustainable #BlueEconomy. Make sure resilient & healthy oceans are a priority of the future #EUOceanPact!🐟🌍 #ProtectEUseas

A new poll by Oceana in Europe reveals that 84% of citizens in Belgium, Cyprus, France and Spain, want more information about the seafood they eat, including processed products like fish fingers, and in restaurants. 🐟 When buying seafood, consumers are asking for information on species, origin, fishing method and environmental sustainability, allowing them to make informed choices. It’s time for the EU to take action. We call on Commissioner-designate for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, and the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to listen to EU citizens and revise the Common Market Organisation Regulation to meet these demands. 🌊 A new report from @bloomberg-philanthropies confirms that much more needs to be done to protect 30% of our ocean by 2030! Political leaders need to take action on their pledges to ensure a thriving, abundant ocean and healthy coastal communities. This is within reach, but we must accelerate efforts and translate promises into real protection. Call for urgent action to protect our ocean today: https://oceana.ly/4f5Zlaj

The "Marine Not-So Protected Areas" session at #EUOceanWeek brought together experts to discuss the state of EU MPAs and the impact of destructive fishing practices like #BottomTrawling. 🌊 Discover key insights and how we can #RethinkFisheries in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/dJNrqJVy

How much do we know about the fish we eat? 📊A report by Oceana Europe reveals that for almost 40% of processed seafood in Belgium, France, and Spain, it’s impossible to know the species, origin, or fishing gear used. Consumers deserve transparency to make informed and sustainable choices in supermarkets, fishmongers and restaurants. Today, on #WorldFoodDay🦐, read our full analysis and learn more about this issue. ➡️https://lnkd.in/dvMysQbB

EU law requires countries to allocate fishing opportunities based on transparent and objective criteria, taking into account the benefits for society, the economy, and the environment. However, in practice, most countries distribute fishing quotas primarily to those with a history of catching the most fish, favouring industrial fleets over artisanal vessels. This approach harms both coastal fishing communities and the marine environment. 📸 Our photo exhibition, showcasing low-impact fishers across Europe, took place from 30 September to 4 October in front of the European Parliament in Brussels. It introduced David, Muireann, Neily, and Primitivo — artisanal fishers dedicated to providing fresh, high-quality seafood while preserving the sustainability and heritage of their coastal communities. Take a look at some of the stunning pictures featured, as well as moments from the inauguration. The #BlueManifesto was launched yesterday at #EUOceanWeek. The event gathered MEPs, key decision-makers, and ocean advocates to present this document, which outlines a roadmap to achieve a healthy ocean by 2030. Led by BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, Oceana in Europe, ClientEarth, Seas At Risk, Surfrider Foundation Europe, and WWF European Policy Office, the Blue Manifesto advocates for an ambitious Ocean Deal that places ocean health at the heart of EU decision-making. It follows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s pledge in July, when she was re-appointed for a new term, to create a “European Ocean Pact.” Read it here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dnQegMZi
