McKinsey & Company has argued airlines may need a mindset shift to realize the benefits of modern retailing and to “become a truly commercial, consumer-facing business”. But those that do, can expect to reap the rewards. New research from the consultants places the value of improved retailing in the aviation space at $45 billion. While the benefits are likely to vary according to the maturity of each airline, according to the research, this could translate into an opportunity in excess of two-to-three per cent of revenue – or 15 per cent of EBITDA – for a carrier.
