Dear All, Today, we celebrate the heroes of the world—our mothers! Mothers play a vital role in shaping who we are, taking care of not just their children but countless others in their communities. Data related to Mother's Day: - In the US, Mother’s Day is the third most lucrative holiday of the year for florists, following only Valentine’s Day and Christmas. - On Mother’s Day, an astonishing 122 million phone calls are made worldwide. - There are an estimated 2 billion mothers around the world right now, and Mother’s Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries. - The most popular gift for Mother's Day is personalized jewelry, particularly necklaces and bracelets, which have consistently been popular choices for gift-givers. Motherhood in Africa? Mothers are very revered and considered to be a central part of the family and a child's life. Most women in many parts of Africa desire to be mothers more than almost anything else in life. I AhunInsights sends warm wishes to all mothers around the world. Happy Mother's Day! #Happy #Mothers #Day LinkedIn #Mothersday2024 #Africa #Ethiopia

The overall inflation is now down by 10% (From 33.5 to 23.3%) What are your thoughts on this Inflation Report?
Inflation has fallen to 23.3% in April 2024 (year-on-year basis), compared to a recent peak of 37.3% in May 2022 and an inflation rate of 33.5% this time last year. While food inflation has fallen only slightly and remains elevated at 27.0% (y-o-y), non-food inflation is now significantly lower at 18.0%, or less than half it’s rate of 36.1% this time last year. This decline broadly parallels the slowdown in money supply growth seen over the past year. Compared to a year ago, overall inflation is now down by 10 percentage points (from 33.5% to 23.3%) while non-food inflation—which is more closely linked to NBE’s monetary policy measures—is down by 18 percentage points (from 36.1% to 18.0%). The latest overall inflation rate is the lowest seen in nearly three years, while non-food inflation has fallen below 20% for the first time in three years. Looking ahead, NBE expects a continued moderation in inflationary pressures till the end of the fiscal year and anticipates year-on-year inflation in June 2024 will be close to the 20% inflation target that had been set roughly a year ago.

We attended an interactive session at the Timbuktu Initiative event in Addis Ababa, science museum. (Pan-African program with a one-billion-dollar innovation fund to empower startups.) We were captivated by the panel discussion between Dr. Brook Taye and Solomon Kassa Here are some key takeaways: #Tax incentives are crucial for startups, and the government role is addressing this issue. #Systemic change is essential to create a better business environment for startups. #Ethiopia may be a later entrant to the #Timbuktoo, but the country can leverage opportunities as a latecomer. By learning from other countries' mistakes, Ethiopia has a chance to match or even surpass existing strategies with the right approach. An interesting example was provided by the panelists: While #Rwanda is experiencing a boom with many innovations, their limited population restricts market size. Ethiopia, with its larger population, could become a significant market opportunity for them, making the country a strategic location for many African countries. #Ethiopia has shown success in recent years, ethio telecom achieved millions of subscribers within two years, and the National ID Ethiopia program has registered millions of people. Dr. Brook also emphasized #perseverance with the quote, "We are marathon runners.” #Timbuktoo #Startup #Intiatives #Ethiopian #Businesses

Our team attended the Digibank Summit at Haile Hotels and Resorts in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Here are some key takeaways from the event: - #Digitalization is Key: The future of Ethiopia's banking sector lies in digitalization. A "digital-first" approach will be essential for banks to compete and survive. - #Partnership and #Innovation: Banks have two options for digitalization: partnering with fintech and technology companies or developing their own. - #Innovation Gap: A major challenge identified was the lack of investment by banks in innovation, technology, and digital solutions. Speakers highlighted the need for banks to develop new products and move away from outdated offerings. - #Untapped #Market: There's a significant untapped market (45%) in Ethiopia. Banks should design products to cater to this lucrative segment and expand financial inclusion to rural areas. #Security Concerns: Security and cybersecurity were highlighted as crucial challenges. Ethiopia needs more cybersecurity specialists and companies to address these concerns. #Collaboration is Key: The overall message emphasized collaboration and partnership as the key to growth in the sector. Banks and digital financial service providers need to work together to drive change and develop the Ethiopian banking landscape. Let's Collaborate and Bring an Impact, Ahun believes that all these technologies have the power to scale up the sector. However, consumer awareness of these technologies is crucial. Awareness initiatives should be implemented alongside innovations to ensure successful adoption. The National Bank of Ethiopia launched the standardization of Ethiopia's QR Code at the Ethiopian Digital Payment Conference. The standard secures and makes the existing scattered QR code payments interoperable. The aim is to increase the acceptance of digital payments at merchant sites by making merchant payments more secure, convenient, and efficient.
