GIV Society Ethiopia reposted this
My take on being part of the Second Cardiac Mission Ethiopia as a volunteer, As an aspiring cardiologist, I have been closely following the work of Heart Attach Ethiopia (HAE) since its first mission last February, which has been quite an inspiration. Even though, I wasn’t sure how, I have always dreamed of being part of this amazing mission. A few weeks back, when GIV Society Ethiopia posted the opportunity to volunteer with HAE on their LinkedIn, I didn’t waste a minute to register. While eagerly awaiting it, one event happened last week, the day team HAE started their second mission, which took my excitement about this opportunity to another level. While working in the ED at a government health facility in Addis, a 35-year-old taxi driver came to me with his right hand on his left chest, complaining of a sudden onset of severe left-side chest pain while driving. After a quick clinical evaluation, I referred him to Black Lion Hospital with the suspicion of Acute Coronary Syndrome. Late afternoon of the same day, when I got on X for an update, I bumped into a post about the heroic act of team HAE in saving the life of my patient by doing PCI after he developed cardiac arrest. This made me feel - more personally - the impact the HAE is having in saving lives. On the second week of this mission, I was fortunate enough to join the team of Dr. Chara Kantipudi, an Electrophysiologist who performed 11 procedures (10 pacemakers and 1 electrophysiologic study) at St. Peter Comprehensive Specialized Hospital – a transformational experience in so many ways. The perfect blend I saw between the international and local cardiac teams and its contribution to the success of the job taught me about the importance of collaboration. The infectious bliss on the face of each patient who could not only otherwise afford but also couldn’t access these services had it not been for the selflessness of team HAE and the generosity of its funder reminded me of the importance of more of such missions to address the ever-increasing demand for advanced cardiac care in Ethiopia. Being tasked with patient data registration and taking informed consent, even though we faced a level of challenge with the application on the first day, with close support and guidance from GIV Society Ethiopia and HAE, things got fixed quickly and turned into a learning experience where we acquired new skills like paying attention to details and mastering nuances of communication. Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to HAE, GIV Society Ethiopia, and other stakeholders for making this mission a success and for the opportunity I got to be part of. It is also my hope and expectation that this noble mission will continue probably at a larger scale. GIV Society Ethiopia Heart Attack Ethiopia, Inc. Tesfaye Telila, MD.
