About us

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Ethiopia on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1964. The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa. It is three times the size of Germany and has a population of around 102 million. Despite average economic growth of 10 percent since 2005, an estimated 30 percent of Ethiopians still live below the poverty line (World Bank). Ethiopia ranks 173rd of 189 countries in UNDP’s 2019 Human Development Index (category: low human development). For decades, the population of the Ethiopian highlands has been affected by increasing food insecurity stemming from high population growth, deforestation, and inappropriate agricultural production methods. The Ethiopian Government has developed an ambitious growth and transformation plan designed to address its objectives in these areas. It aims to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and double the country’s economic output. To accompany the plan, the government has put in place its Homegrown Economic Reform strategy, which focuses on reducing poverty, creating jobs for young people, and promoting economic growth. Germany is supporting this strategy and in November 2019 concluded with Ethiopia what is known as a reform partnership – an in-depth form of development cooperation with reform-minded African partner countries as part of the G20 Compact with Africa initiative. The registered offices of GIZ are in Bonn and Eschborn (Germany). Support to Transform Challenges into Opportunities Recurring drought and flooding pose significant challenges to pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in the Ethiopian lowlands. These extreme weather conditions are leading to severe vegetation loss, erosion, and the formation of large and deep dry valleys receiving flash floods rushing away leaving dust behind. These resulted in the loss of agricultural and grazing land, decline of agricultural productivity, and livelihood crises for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists. In response and through the Capacity Development for Strengthened Drought Resilience in the Lowlands of Ethiopia project, GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti together with its partners has expanded its successful land rehabilitation initiatives into South Ethiopia and Oromia, building on its work in the Afar and Somali regions. With the recent inauguration of its new office in Jinka, it is providing essential material support to its South Ethiopia partners. The same support has been materialized for Oromia region. The support is vital for upscaling and implementing the Dry Valley Rehabilitation and Productive Use approach in Oromia and South Ethiopia regions, transforming these challenges into sustainable opportunities for local communities. The Capacity Development for Strengthened Drought Resilience in the Lowlands of Ethiopia (CDSDR) project is implemented on behalf of the German Government. A recent Validation Workshop on the National Functional and Accessible Warranty System Roadmap for Solar PV Products was held to ensure the roadmap aligns with national needs and effectively serves both consumers and the stakeholders in the solar energy sector. Ato Birhanu Woldu from Rural Energy Technology Development and Promotion Centre at the ethiopian ministry of water energy (MoWE) and Mr. Al Mudabbir Bin Anam from the GIZ-implemented "Energising Development Ethiopia" (EnDev) project delivered opening remarks, both highlighting the importance of a reliable warranty system in building consumer trust and promoting market growth for solar products in Ethiopia. The workshop highlights key elements of the National Functional Warranty System, the implementation framework, monitoring, and evaluation strategies, as well as the resource needed and cost considerations essential for establishing an effective warranty system for solar PV products. Participants engaged in group discussions on solar power system quality standards, warranty requirements, and claim processes. Those discussions covered important topics such as regulatory frameworks, consumer education, competition-based business strategies, and monitoring mechanisms extending to the regional level. The workshop concluded with a summary of key outcomes and outlined the next steps, including raising further stakeholder awareness and establishing a timeline for finalizing the roadmap. This event marks an important milestone in advancing Ethiopia towards a sustainable solar PV market, improving energy access for millions of people across Ethiopia.
