🚨 NEW DATA STORY from Land Portal Foundation Challenges of securing land rights in post-conflict Burundi By Dr. Rick de Satgé, Country Research & Engagement Consultant, Land Portal Foundation In Burundi, a small landlocked country in Africa's Great Lakes region, land is far more than an economic resource – it is the foundation of history, livelihood, and identity for millions. However, Burundi's turbulent past, marked by cycles of conflict, displacement, and return since the 1970s, has created a complex web of competing land claims that threaten efforts to build lasting peace and stability. The challenges are immense. With one of Africa's highest population densities and over 90% of its people reliant on agriculture, competition for land in Burundi is intense. Decades of conflict have resulted in situations where multiple families often have legitimate claims to the same plots, creating a volatile landscape of overlapping rights and grievances. 🌍 “Soil is spiritual, and land is not only about economics” 🌱 “Soil is spiritual, and land is not only about economics.” These wise words from Shumirai Guzha, an Agricultural Economist from Zimbabwe, resonated with us during the sixth Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa -NELGA short course on the Political Economy of Land Governance in Africa hosted by the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS). Over five days, 75 land professionals from 41 African countries delved deep into topics ranging from customary land tenure and women’s land rights to the impacts of the climate crisis on land governance. With the guidance of top experts like Prof. Mamadou Goïta and Dr. Joan Kagwanja, we challenged myths, shared insights, and strengthened our commitment to sustainable land governance. The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) seeks a qualified consultant to conduct a tracer and impact study for the Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa -NELGA short course on the Political Economy of Land Governance in Africa. This is a unique chance to evaluate the reach and impact of our training programs that have empowered 260 land professionals across 38 African countries since 2018. Key Tasks: 🔍 Review relevant documents and produce an inception report. 📊 Develop, test, and administer an online survey. 🗣 Conduct interviews and focus groups. 📈 Analyze and compare data by various factors (sector, seniority, gender, etc.). 📝 Produce a detailed report and present findings to PLAAS and stakeholders.
