Improving agricultural productivity begins with strong agronomic practices. When farmers are equipped with the right knowledge and skills, they can enhance both yield and quality. However, higher production doesn't always translate to higher profits. This is why it’s equally important for farmers to develop solid business management skills. In our subscription farming model pilot project we are implementing with USAID CATALYZE, we have provided training to over 550 farmers, covering both agronomy and business management. The agronomy sessions focused on boosting yield productivity and improving quality through implementing good farming practices, while our business management workshops highlighted key financial skills such as bookkeeping and budgeting. Additionally, we facilitated a formal connection between farmers and buyers through contract farming agreements for 371 farmers. This arrangement ensures that farmers receive advance payments for their yields and fosters a sustainable, long-term relationship between producers and buyers. At our recent ‘Subscription Model Farming’ project launch workshop hosted in partnership with USAID CATALYZE , insights were shared on the transformative potential of processors in sustainable value chains. One key point discussed was how Ethiopian turmeric production mirrors the historical challenges faced by the cotton industry. Historically, cotton was produced in abundance but faced issues due to limited market access, eventually leading to the disposal of the crop. The introduction of commercial ginneries revolutionized the cotton industry by offering essential value-added services that efficiently handled and stored cotton, maintaining its quality and preventing wastage. Applying similar strategies to the turmeric value chain marks a significant milestone. The involvement of turmeric processors plays a crucial role in the development of this value chain. To support this development, local turmeric processors have been carefully selected, and efforts are underway to enhance their capabilities through machinery support, financial assistance, and technical guidance. Stay tuned for more insights!

The market is a key driver of success for any business, and this holds true for agriculture as well. High production yields are meaningless for farmers without proper market access. Developing a market-oriented product starts with understanding the needs of the market. The subscription farming model focuses on identifying these needs and establishing a sustainable relationship between farmers, processors and buyers, enabling farmers to sell consistently to their buyers with a negotiated price. In 2022, after 20 years of moving forward, the journey towards universal access to electricity took a step back. Around 685 million individuals were without electricity, and if things continue as they are, by 2030, approximately 660 million people will still lack access, with a large majority, about 85%, residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. Here is an interesting read, a report on Expert Perspectives on Growing Renewable Electricity. In the report, Damilola Ogunbiyi emphasizes the crucial need to direct clean energy funding towards developing countries. By addressing inaccurate risk pricing and de-risking investments, we can enhance investor confidence in clean energy projects in regions like Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Such actions are vital for achieving the global goal of tripling renewable energy by 2030. Adequate planning and targeted financing initiatives are key to accelerating the transition towards a sustainable energy future. #CleanEnergy #Renewables #SustainableDevelopment #energyaccess #sdgs #ethiopia #africa Read the full report here 👇 :

#DidYouKnow that around 3.5 billion people lack reliable access to energy, making it difficult for them to earn an income? 💭💡 At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels are damaging the climate and the natural resources people depend on for their livelihoods. By accelerating the shift to #RenewableEnergy, we can tackle both problems at once: enabling people to boost their income so they can afford a better life, and reducing emissions to combat #ClimateChange and protect the planet for future generations 🌏 We’re working with our partners Sustain Plus, CLASP (Efficiency for Access Coalition) and Health Care Without Harm to give more people access to sustainable renewable energy solutions. Our visit to Sheko, located in southwest Ethiopia, was a truly memorable experience. We were captivated by the vivid turmeric farms and the majestic trees adorned with black pepper plants. During our time there, we explored farms that follow the subscription farming approach, which showcased the area's great potential for growing spices. We listened to farmers share their stories about producing goods and how this model could enhance their output. The subscription farming method is designed to address the challenges faced by these farmers by: - Offering upfront payments to ease financial burdens. - Empowering local processors and introducing modern technologies to enhance efficiency and product quality, benefiting everyone involved. - Facilitating connections between producers and buyers to establish long-term business relationships among all parties.
