The brewers of PEKILO, the original mycoprotein. Sustainable protein is ready for scale!
About us
Enifer, a spin-off company from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, was founded by five scientists in 2020 to develop and commercialize the proprietary PEKILO® technology further. A process originally developed and used by the Finnish forest industry at a commercial scale, the PEKILO® technology enables the biotechnological conversion of dilute side streams into a high-protein ingredient, PEKILO® mycoprotein. Transforming circular economy by-products into planet friendly protein - This is our recipe for a sustainable food system that enables healthy and tasty diets for all.

We are thrilled to announce a new addition to our team! 🎉 With the construction of our first factory in full swing, we are gearing up for the commercial launch of PEKILO®Pet and excited to welcome Jeroen Schweitz as our new Chief Commercial Officer, leading the change towards planet-friendly protein. Jeroen has over 16 years of expertise in the pet food industry, with a diverse career that began in the food business. He was responsible for global sales of flavors and extracts to a major international food producer. He then spent a few years in business development roles with several IT companies, before funding his true passion—pet food. His journey in the pet food industry started with a role overseeing sales, marketing, and management for a leading organic brand in Europe. He then shifted his focus to the commercialization of premium pet food ingredients. The thread in his career has always been selling unique, innovative, and challenging products and services. If you want health-promoting and sustainable protein in your pet food, you know who to call! 🤝

Great news for lovers of planet-friendly pet food! 👋 PEKILO®Pet was recently featured in a dog feeding trial conducted by the canine nutrition laboratory (LENUCAN) at the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Brazil. Here are the main findings: 👉 Protein digestibility of PEKILO®Pet was high at 83.9% (20% inclusion rate). 👉Statistically significant increases were found in gut microbiome diversity, with increases in potentially probiotic bacteria and decreases in potentially harmful bacteria when PEKILO®Pet was included in the diet. 👉 Statistically significant increases were found in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SFCAs) when diet included PEKILO®Pet 👉 Diets containing PEKILO®Pet were found to be as palatable as the reference diets. These gut health-promoting findings are particularly exciting, as previous research has demonstrated the critical role gut health plays in overall animal well-being, including immune system modulation, stress reduction, and support for healthy growth. Better yet, these health benefits are achieved with a protein that has up to 90% lower GHG emissions than imported soya 🌍 Find all the details in the link in the comments 👇

We're thrilled to share that demolition work at the site of our very first €33M PEKILO® factory has officially begun!👏 Earlier this year, we announced that the project is fully funded, and now, the time has come to turn our vision into reality as we kick off construction. "Everything is going according to plan, and we're right on track with our timeline. Procurement is in full swing, and the main equipment will be secured within a month. It's an exciting moment to see our plans begin to materialize, and the momentum will only continue to grow from here,” says Risto Ikonen, our Head of Plant Engineering. With demolition underway, we’re steadily progressing towards the construction phase. Over the coming months, you can expect updates as the building work continues. We’re excited to share this journey with you as we continue to break new ground—both figuratively and literally!

🍄 🥓 "Finnish paper and pulp companies had a lot of side-streams causing eutrophication and oxygen depletion. And then they realized that fungal fermentation could be one way to upcycle these byproduct streams." #Alternativeproteins are a fast growing market driven by health and wellness trends, rising vegetarian and vegan populations and environmental concerns. Europe is highly dependent on soy imports from countries like Brazil as its main source of non-animal based protein source. Not only does this impact the European farmers' price competitiveness, but associated topics like deforestation raise questions of sustainability. In episode 6, CEO and Co-Founder Simo Ellilä from the Finnish start-up Enifer introduces us to a new category of alternative proteins, based on fungi: #mycoproteins. In their quest to move away from using unsustainable land animal production systems, Enifer applies a traditional fungal fermentation process that originates from the Finnish pulp and paper sector to convert side-streams into proteins for the food, animal feed, pet food and acquaculture feed industries. We covered topics like 🔄 The advantages of mycoproteins including their immune boosting properties 🔄 How Finland is positioning itself as an alternative protein country 🔄 What type of funding Enifer has secured to build their new industrial scale plant within an existing sugar refinery 🔄 Why Venture Capital funds are still shying away from high CAPEX business models in the industrial biotech sphere 🔄 Why #economicallocation is a fairer way measure environmental impact than CO2 footprint, and why you should include other factors like water usage and eutrophication in your impact calculations! 💡 Thank you Simo for sharing your expertise on the alternative proteins industry, the fungal fermentation process of Enifer and the complexities of measuring the holistic impact of waste valorization! 🎙 Tune in on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & Co to hear the full episode and make sure to follow bioCircular Loop for summary articles, informative videos and updates!
