Soilwatch
Environmental Services
Transparent and trusted analysis and advice for nature-based carbon offset, restoration and development projects
About us
At Soilwatch, we believe in empowering communities to create their own solutions in the climate emergency. Adapting to climate change, preventing desertification and enhancing food security aren’t separate paths in development, but come together in the soil. By applying remote sensing technology and machine learning, we are able to provide up to date, reliable and low cost soil carbon measurements and develop verified carbon removal projects in North and East Africa. These projects not only remove CO2 from the atmosphere, but mitigate conflict and food insecurity in the most vulnerable areas where our team has direct on the ground experience.

At SoilWatch, we've been working hard to build integrated approaches and bringing in multiple stakeholders to create urgently needed impact. Great discussions through Team Finland Kenya and more to follow 💪 Stay tuned 👂
Had the pleasure yesterday to meet with the Permanent Secretary Pekka Pesonen and Senior Specialist Joel Järvinen from the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry during their visit to Nairobi to introduce our work and discuss issues related to aid and rural support in the region. Also lending their expertise were colleagues from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) - Sauli Hurri, Lucas Lindfors, and Ronald Ajengo - to talk about their country programme supporting smallholder farmers and agricultural value chains with funding from Finland. Issues with agricultural livelihoods are severe in the region with an aging farming population, dwindling yields, climate change and wider environmental degradation, and the difficulties in securing funding for primary production on which all value chains rely. These issues are not only affecting farmers in East Africa as the trends are more global, though vulnerability and impacts on communities are higher due to lower social security support systems. Integrated efforts between public and private organisations on many levels are required to address these issues to avoid chronic food and water insecurity, entrenched poverty, a collapse in rural ecosystems and the communities that rely on them, along with forced migration and conflict that would follow. Excited also to go beyond these issues and discuss concrete ways that these integrated solutions can be implemented, and what role each of our organisations can play. Through strategic investment and engagement, even a small country like Finland can lead the way in this. Thank you Matts Weurlander and Team Finland Kenya for organising! #climatechange #ruraldevelopment #foodsecurity #agriculture Soilwatch

A UN expert group comes to an agreement of key elements of an international carbon trading system. The 12-strong group includes also representatives from the EU and Saudi-Arabia who have traditionally opposed in climate policy. Citing Eve Tamme, the unilateral adoption of the framework this week by the UN body made the international carbon market "basically operational". Functioning international carbon markets can help to fund climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in poorer countries. #climatefinance #carbonpricing #cop29 #climatechange #carboncapture #climatetech #sustainabledevelopment https://lnkd.in/g9sn9AqU

Every year, 100 million hectares of land—equal to the size of Egypt—are lost to degradation, harming ecosystems and food security, and driving migration. At #COP16Riyadh, leaders will unite to protect our planet for future generations. Act now for #OurLandOurFuture. For more information, visit our website: www.unccdcop16.org #UNCCDCOP16 #COP16

Nature-based solutions are vital for the fight against climate change. Research shows that by working with nature, we can significantly cut emissions and limit global warming. Nature-based solutions can also play a key role in protecting communities from climate hazards like floods and heat waves. 🌍 But what are the #climatefinance opportunities in this space and how can we tap into those? We'll be spending the next few months answering those questions. To kickstart this conversation, we bring you a #naturebasedsolutions in agriculture opportunity. We’re offering up to $500,000 to private sector partners piloting or scaling innovative models for financing both sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation in the countries where USAID works. Applications are due November 4. Don't miss this opportunity: https://lnkd.in/duVACASB

Did you know that in 2023, the World Food Programme (WFP) restored 337,000 hectares of land? WFP's approach combines land restoration with initiatives that enhance food security, build resilience, and reduce disaster risks. This integrated resilience strategy ensures that restored landscapes not only improve the environment but also empower local populations to better withstand future climate shocks. We recently held a highly productive meeting with WFP's regional headquarters in Nairobi to discuss frameworks for monitoring and demonstrating both the social and climate benefits of these land restoration efforts. #landrestoration #climatefinance #regenerativeagriculture #sustainabledevelopment #foodsecurity #soilhealth #ecosysterestoration #climatetech Soilwatch World Food Programme
