Monitor and reduce Scope 3 emissions at global scale

About us

Epoch is a venture-backed technology company that leverages state-of-the-art technologies to make agricultural and forestry supply chains transparent and sustainable. We leverage earth observation and web3 technology to monitor and report on environmental outcomes at the first mile of supply chains and leverage global payment networks to tie premium payments to improvement in measured and quantified sustainability metrics. Today, 10 Gt of CO2e emissions annually result from growing ingredients and commodities in more than 2 billion farms globally. To get to net zero, we will need globally scalable technologies to measure carbon impact and deliver incentives to achieve reductions in the "first mile" of these supply chains. Epoch makes it easy, cheap, and accessible for corporates and governments to deliver incentives to this "first mile" globally.

The business model employed by most MRV companies just don't work for the global south. A business model built on sharing data and monetizing outcomes is how you elevate and empower smallholders, the backbone of supply chains of so many critical soft commodities originating in the tropics. Thank you Mercy Corps Ventures and Timothy Rann for partnering on this Op Ed. Agriculture and forestry-linked supply chains contribute over 30% of global carbon emissions and are major drivers of biodiversity loss. Yet, at the heart of these supply chains are smallholder farmers in the Global South, whose sustainable practices often outperform industrial plantations. At MCV, we believe in the potential to reduce CO2 emissions through regenerative practices. That’s why we’ve invested in Epoch’s platform, which champions an open-data approach to revolutionize supply chains, support smallholders, and drive meaningful climate action. Discover how smallholder production offers a more sustainable alternative to industrial methods and the crucial role of open data in empowering these farmers amidst increasing regulatory pressures. Epoch's very own William Ouellette just got published in Climate Policy along with Bas Heerma van Voss of the Dutch Central Bank. Together, they present a mechanism to quantify the potential of nature based solutions at a national level.  Within the Epoch offering, we further build on this work to determine NbS potential and the Carbon Opportunity Cost (COC) of agricultural commodities at national and supply shed levels, which is an essential part of carbon accounting in the land sector removal guidance (LSRG) of the GHG Protocol. See below for the paper. Jake Wilkins Raviv Turner Maex Ament Jahed Momand Pasinee Tangsuriyapaisan Emily Moberg, PhD

Nature restoration is in many cases more cost-efficient than climate mitigation options now subsidized by governments. The economically sensible thing to do for countries that pursue climate goals is to invest more in nature – even if we look only at climate benefits and disregard all other benefits such investments may bring. Theoretically. In practice things are not always so easy. There are many constraints on investments in nature. Fundamentally, those constraints are mostly about information: how do we know whether investment in nature are additional to a business-as-usual scenario? How do we know that restored nature will be given sufficient time to realize carbon sequestration potential? These constraints explain why only 2% of climate finance is directed towards nature, even though so-called Nature-based Solutions (NbS) make up 23% of the measures countries propose to reach their goals under the Paris agreement. What we need, therefore, is better information on NbS. Satellite data can help. They are now granular enough to give insight to countries looking to invest in nature and host countries looking to develop NbS projects. They can serve as additional information for investment decisions, and also help with monitoring, reporting and verification of individual projects. In this paper in the journal Climate Policy, William Ouellette and I present a proof of concept. We use satellite data, William's expertise, to calculate MACC-curves for Lesotho and Rwanda. Coupled with the institutional improvements necessary to create a reliable intergovernmental carbon credit market, these technological developments have the potential to boost international investment in nature. See the link below for the full article.  https://lnkd.in/eMa7zU4j Also, check out all the cool things William and his business partner Jinal Surti do with satellite data to help the international carbon market forward: https://www.epoch.blue/

It is awesome to see an investment memo (in this case, the 'why we invested blog') have the vision that so closely aligns with the founders.' That's what I see here. Jahed Momand was one of the first investors I met, without whom this round wouldn't have come together so well. Excited to have arguably *the* most active nature-tech investor on our cap table. Welcome Jahed Momand and Matthew Stotts 🌐 from Cerulean Ventures!

At Cerulean, we've looked at the carbon markets and MRV sector and long asked ourselves where the alpha and impact lies within them. There's no real market for carbon dioxide (we've had to stretch ourselves into pretzels to create one), and no one wants to pay for MRV, yet every NGO and government on the face of the Earth will tell you they want to invest in the [nature-positive, regenerative transition]. So who's going to pay for it? That's what the team at our next investment, Epoch, set out to build — emissions monitoring and payments for sustainable supply chains, starting with food and ag. We're extremely impressed by Jinal Surti and William Ouellette's ability to move quickly, understand customer problems, ship new products, and book early revenue. We estimate the market for monitoring cross border commodities and their land use associated emissions at somewhere near $700B — MRV is a part of the puzzle, but delivering payments to the actually existing human beings who do the work is a key, non-negotiable part of said puzzle, and they have great traction on this front. We're honored to add them to our portfolio in the #naturetech space. When we were starting Epoch, William Ouellette and I were told by multiple people to meet with Maex Ament and Philip Stehlik - the founding duo behind Centrifuge and Taulia. Supply chain payments, enterprise software, fintech, web3 - all the subject matter expertise we needed to help us with Epoch. But we also wanted to diligence them - we spoke to two other founders they supported and one of them told us "I wish people talk about me behind my back the way people talk about Maex and Philip." We now see why. We've enlisted Maex and Philip to be not just investors, but also "co-pilots" helping on day to day issues - ranging from unblocking deals, to partnership agreements to moonshots. Most importantly, we love working with them. They have been in the trenches and know what it means to start from scratch. We couldn't be more thrilled to have them onboard! Thank you Maex Ament and Philip Stehlik!

It's hard to find a company that isn’t claiming to move toward Net Zero these days. But how many are making good on their claims, and how many can prove it? The challenge, as ever, lies in supply chains. Scope 3 emissions — those that echo down the supply chain and represent up to 70% of a company’s carbon footprint — are notoriously hard to track and monitor, which makes it even harder to hold ourselves and each other to account.   What the world needs is incentivization, collaboration, and accountability, all hard-coded into our technology and our supply chains.  So it’s a good job Epoch exists. Led by Jinal Surti and William Ouellette, Epoch is making agricultural and forestry supply chains transparent and sustainable with technology that makes carbon reduction a win-win for growers and buyers.  We could not be more excited to support Jinal & William as co-pilots to help them build this plane. Find the full story on what Epoch is working on and why we're excited below!👇

Soft commodity supply chains are changing - we are transitioning from an era of "black-boxed" supply chains to trusted networks and relationships. This is driven by the need for transparency and data - specifically sustainability data. Sustainability data affects a company's most important stakeholder relationships: Capital Markets: $1T in annual issuance of green, social, sustainability, or sustainability-linked bonds in 2022, a 5x increase from 2018 (data from Standard Chartered and Moody's Corporation) Regulators: $800B worth of soft commodities are now regulated by climate regulations like EUDR (data from USDA, European Commission, Forrester) Customers: 4.5% in incremental annual growth rate of sustainability marketed products compared to conventional products over the last five years (data from NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business) We provide the data and financial infrastructure for these supply chains to adapt to these changes. Most importantly, we help these supply chains become more sustainable - not just in terms of carbon, but also in terms of biodiversity, water use, resilience and economic inclusion. Why We Invested: Epoch is making agricultural supply chains more transparent, effective and resilient to climate disruption. ◾ Smallholder farmers produce a third of the world’s food supply. ◾ In emerging economies, this number is larger. ◾ These farmers face significant climate vulnerabilities that directly affect their productivity and income.  ◾ Any effective transition to a green economy must factor smallholder farmers. Epoch connects brands with local producers in their supply chains by managing inset payments through cross-border channels and last-mile mobile money networks, providing MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) capabilities. The result is that smallholder farmers can strengthen, adapt, and improve livelihoods through sustainable production methods. "We are fortunate to have an opportunity to bring meaningful economic uplift to the most vulnerable communities, drive emissions emissions reduction in the order of gigatons, AND drive meaningful economic value to the buyers, brands and retailers in agriculture and forestry-linked supply chains. This is exactly the right time to be working on this opportunity and we are excited about what the future holds."
