In 2023 alone, over 500,000 people from 50+ nationalities crossed this dangerous terrain, with 81% coming from South America. The challenge? 🌪️ Lack of real-time data to support effective humanitarian responses. ✨ Enter Balcony.io: A free, anonymous geo-messaging mobile app that’s revolutionizing how we address migration crises. By enabling two-way communication between migrants and humanitarian organizations, we can now assess needs more responsively and collaboratively. 🤝💬 🔍 Our Study focuses on two key stages: 1️⃣ Migrants in Transit: Connecting with the app in Medellín, Colombia, sharing demographic details, receiving crucial information about safety, aid locations, and more. 🏥🛏️📲 2️⃣ Humanitarian Organizations: Utilizing Balcony.io to manage cases, create communication channels, and respond more effectively. 🗂️📡 In just 2.5 months, 340 migrants connected. Most were heading to North America, with 73% being Venezuelan. Their top needs? 🍲 Food & water, 🚿 access to hygiene facilities, 🏥 medical assistance, 📍 route information, and 🏠 temporary accommodation. 🔸Key Insights: - Almost half traveled in small groups (2-4), with 71% including children/adolescents 👨👩👧👦 - Additional needs included weather updates, border policy changes, and locations for essential services. 🌧️🗺️ 🚀 Preliminary results highlight how real-time, location-specific data can transform humanitarian responses. 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 UNICEF 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. In September 2024, an extension of the agreement was approved, ensuring that the project will continue developing processes and delivering information products at both the national and territorial levels. Key components of these processes include capacity transfer for the Protection Risk Identification Tool and the creation of information products for the Situational Analysis of Children in Colombia , focusing on the triple affectation context (migration, sudden emergencies, and armed conflict). With the extension in place until December, there is renewed commitment to support management and information-sharing for the humanitarian platforms where UNICEF serves as a co-leader, including the GIFMM (Interagency Group on Mixed Migration Flows) and the Humanitarian Country Team (EHP). This extension will focus on key priorities, accompanied by a refined implementation strategy and technical guidance. Priorities for the Extension: 1️⃣ Inter-Agency Planning and Information Management Support Strengthening the management and timely dissemination of information for the inter-agency planning of clusters/sectors led by UNICEF, including Education in Emergencies, WASH, Nutrition, and Child Protection. 2️⃣ Development of Information Products for Decision-Making Continued development of data-driven products, including situational analysis, that provide actionable insights for decision-making at both national and local levels. 3️⃣ Capacity Building in Information Management Tools Enhancing the technical capacities of partners in cluster coordination spaces, both nationally and territorially, with tailored training on information management tools. 4️⃣ Strengthening Sudden Emergency Response Information Management Standardizing data collection processes for rapid needs assessments and analysis, improving the ability to manage and analyze information during sudden emergencies. 5️⃣ Sustained Capacity Building within UNICEF Teams Installing lasting capacity within UNICEF teams by transferring proven processes for managing information and ensuring their impact on decision-making continues to grow. #UNICEF #HumanitarianResponse #InformationManagement #TechnicalAssistance #Colombia 🇨🇴 #ChildProtection #Migration #EmergencyResponse #ArmedConflict #CapacityBuilding #DataDriven #SituationalAnalysis #InterAgencyCollaboration #EducationInEmergencies #WASH #Nutrition #SuddenEmergencies #SustainableDevelopment #Partnerships #CommunitySupport #GlobalDevelopment

🌧️𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮 𝗡𝗶𝗻̃𝗮 𝗣𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰-𝗜𝗜 🌧️ The #Colombia Health Cluster, with the valuable support of 3iS, has developed the Departmental and Municipal Health Prioritization Index to prepare for the potential La Niña Phenomenon during the second half of 2024. 🔍 Key Results: #Chocó could be one of the most affected departments if the phenomenon is confirmed, facing serious health challenges. #Caquetá, #Vaupés, #Huila, #Putumayo, and La #Guajira could see a significant increase in diseases such as dengue and malaria, as well as in cases of Extreme Maternal Morbidity (MME) and infant mortality due to Acute Diarrheal Disease (EDA) and Acute Respiratory Infection (IRA). At the municipal level, 287 territories have been classified as being at very high risk of negative health impacts, including areas like La Mojana, already declared in public calamity due to disasters in 2024 and with frequent reports of events associated with armed conflict. This index is a crucial tool to anticipate and mitigate adverse public health effects in #Colombia.
