Methane emissions are rising rapidly and threaten our ability to achieve global climate goals. How can nations best meet their methane-reduction pledges? Scientists, including members of CCAC Scientific Advisory Panel, emphasize the urgent need for rapid decreases in methane emissions to slow near-term global warming and maintain established carbon budgets. Their paper outlines three imperatives: 📉 Reversing recent growth in methane emissions, aligning methane-and CO₂ mitigation. 📝 Maximizing the impact and cost-effectiveness of methane abatement strategies. ⚖ How countries can achieve these while also addressing social equity issues. Important read from Kaveh Madani in Forbes today, on the urgency of tackling methane emissions ⬇ "Due to its chemical structure, methane can trap more heat in the atmosphere, making it over 80 times more harmful than CO2 in the first 20 years after its release. This greenhouse gas is responsible for one-third of total warming since the Industrial Revolution. But this is not the whole story. Methane is also a major contributor to the formation of ozone, a detrimental air pollutant that harms humans, ecosystems, and agricultural production. Annually, half a million premature deaths across the world are caused by the ozone resulting from human-caused methane production." International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO
Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Heath, Professor at CUNY-CREST, Ex-VP of UN Environmental Assembly Bureau, Iran's Former Deputy Vice President

The next round of NDCs needs to put us on a path to preserve a livable planet and provide climate justice for all. Emissions must fall dramatically and efforts to adapt to climate impacts must be stepped up. To support NDCs 3.0, the United Nations is hosting regional events to boost ambition. https://lnkd.in/dB4M6PuB

🌍 Reflections from last week’s Coal Mine Methane - CCAC M-RAP NDC Enhancement Opportunities and Examples Workshop Key Achievements and Impact: 1. Country Commitments: Kazakhstan and Colombia showcased their plans to include coal mine methane emissions mitigation initiatives in their National Determined Contributions (NDCs) 3.0, demonstrating a significant step towards enhanced climate action. 2. Partnership in Action: The joint organization of this workshop by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) underscores the strengthened collaboration and unified approach to tackling methane emissions. The M-RAP NDC Enhancement Webinar Series provided practical guidance on leveraging the M-RAP methodology and CCAC tools and resources to enhance NDCs. Participants gained valuable insights from exemplary practices shared by country representatives. Access recordings and presentations from previous sessions, including Kick-off, Agriculture, Oil & Gas, and Waste sectors are available here: https://lnkd.in/gdVZm-Nb For more information on the Methane Roadmap Action Programme, please contact Nathan Borgford-Parnell (nathan.borgford-parnell@un.org) and Sophie Bonnard (sophie.bonnard1@un.org). Regulations promoting low to zero global-warming potential alternatives in air conditioning & refrigeration is critical. Equally urgent is preventing the dumping of inefficient cooling appliances with outdated refrigerants in developing countries. https://lnkd.in/dKXUXEka

UN Secretary General Antonio Guiterres has issued an urgent call to action to better protect billions around the world exposed to crippling effects of extreme heat, as global temperature rise continues unabated. As the climate emergency worsens we risk overshooting #1.5°C. Projections show that if we reach 2.5°C global #warming forest fires could reduce the global area covered by up to 60%. https://lnkd.in/dKPG7zXd
