💡 How can we tackle #malnutrition in the #Sahel region through viable commercial solutions in partnership with #localbusinesses? Learnings and future opportunities From 2018 to 2023, together with French NGO GRET and a consortium of partners, the Hystra team co-led the design and implementation of the Meriem project, a 5-year effort to develop commercial solutions to prevent malnutrition in urban areas of the Sahel region, supported jointly by the Agence Française de Développement and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In the capital and secondary cities of Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, Niger 🇳🇪 and Mali 🇲🇱, our team worked with businesses among the regional and national leaders to get everyday food products on the market that are: - Formulated to deliver specific nutritional benefits targeted at infants from 6-24 months of age, and women of reproductive age - Priced so that low and medium-income populations are able to purchase them often enough to make a significant difference to their nutritional intake 🚀 The Meriem project supported these businesses every step of the way from product design to marketing plan through production and brand strategy. Several members of the Hystra team were posted in the Sahel for periods ranging from a few weeks to over a year. The Meriem team's work resulted in half a dozen affordable fortified products launched for pilots or at scale. ✅ Despite challenging working conditions due to regional political instability, the COVID pandemic and the impact of the Ukraine war on global supply chains, two of these products are still on the market in Burkina Faso and Niger. From our successes and failures, we have formalized our learnings on the development, production, sale and marketing of locally fortified foods, with the objective to help drive local food markets towards better nutrition at less cost, in the Sahel and beyond. 💬 Link to the publications below! Fresh news from the energy sector, where Lucie Klarsfeld McGrath launched the Last Mile Distribution Benchmark with the Global Distributors Collective (GDC)! Available here: https://lnkd.in/euT2Cfmq
Partner at Hystra - Inclusive Business Strategy / Business Model Innovation / Last-Mile Distribution / Private Sector Engagement
Back from an intense week at #GOGFSE! Lots of news in the energy sector. Here are a few KTAs: 💰 Getting #PayGo to #profitability. Only a handful of companies have built profitable models – Solar Panda and HERi Madagascar are among the lucky (or talented) few. Tools now exist that can help others improve: PAYGo Lab has developed a methodology to improve PayGo portfolio quality; together with the Global Distributors Collective (GDC), we at Hystra launched a benchmark of 23 KPIs that have been proven to make or break last mile companies' profitability, now available in open source. 🧱 #Consolidating. As a number of PayGo players are on sale, some of the “healthier” players are looking at possible acquisitions. The next 18 months will likely see a number of M&A in PayGo. 🚧 Testing #newmodels for better #access. The new Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report 2024 highlighted that only 50% of customers can be reached with Paygo. A few donors are developing Result-Based Financing to help increase access. In parallel, SolarAid, MOON and EasySolar launched REAL (Rural Energy Access Lab) with the objective of testing different “energy as a service" models: donors or governments pay for solar product capex and customers cover opex, for villages that are not in the plans of Rural Energy Agencies and that current PayGo companies do not reach (the big question being how to truly avoid overlap at a large scale, or else how to possibly enable both models to live side by side). The launch raised a lot of interest (from donors in particular) and questions (from existing players in the industry and investors). ☘️ Getting (agro) #productiveuse appliances to the next level. Growth is very slow. Results from a study we did last year on irrigation remain true: SunCulture is the only player with more than a few thousands units installed (over 65k). Sessions on this topic highlighted a lot of the failures of models tried to date, notably due to the lack of #marketaccess for farmers increasing their productivity (from irrigation or cold rooms). Investors recognize the need for better linkage between the agro and energy sectors that are still very much siloed, and for technical assistance on business models going beyond technology aspects. 🏍️ Getting #emobility to scale in urban and reach rural areas. E-mobility has seen fast growth over the past few years, with different models (leasing, rent to own, connection with fleet of Uber-like companies etc). However it is for now limited to urban areas – the challenge for rural being that, in the absence of charging or battery swapping stations, the range of electric bikes can be too small for the required distances. This sector will likely see rapid growth in urban markets – but will it manage to serve rural ones too? See below in comments the references of the reports mentioned in this post. If you have other KTAs from this year’s summit, or on the state of energy access, please don't hesitate to share!

🚀 She-Leads Impact Fund: Bridging the Last-Mile Gap and Empowering Rural Women and Communities 🚀 Did you know that over 3.7 billion people around the world survive on less than $6.85 a day, most of whom live in underserved rural areas across Asia and Africa? These communities struggle to access essential goods and services such as clean water, electricity, healthcare, and financial support. Due to the lack of efficient distribution networks in these regions, they often pay more for inferior products compared to urban areas. For women, the challenges are even greater—cultural barriers, fewer formal job opportunities, and limited mobility to urban areas leave them especially vulnerable to this access gap. ⭐ That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce the She-Leads Impact Fund (SLIF)—an initiative co-led by Frontier Innovations Foundation (FIF) and Hystra, aimed at transforming last-mile distribution networks. Our goal is to provide rural communities with access to life-changing products and services while empowering local women as leaders and change agents! 🙌 🔑 Leveraging the proven technology, processes, and business model of last-mile pioneer Frontier Markets, SLIF will provide in-depth support to 3 last-mile distributors over 3 years through technology transfer, funding, and training. This support will enable them to deepen their impact by diversifying the goods and services they offer, improving efficiency, and accelerating their path to sustainability, helping them scale faster and reach more communities. More specifically, SLIF looks to: ✅ Help the supported last-mile distributors boost their annual sales by $10M+ each. ✅ Double the income of 9,000+ local agents, with a strong focus on empowering women. ✅ Attracting $6M+ in additional investments to help scale these efforts. 💡 The future of rural communities—and the women within them—depends on better access to essential goods, services, and economic opportunities. We’re actively seeking partners, funders, and connectors who share this vision to help expand our reach. 📩 Interested in making a lasting impact? #Lastmile access to beneficial goods and services has been a longstanding fight of ours. We're super thrilled to partner with one of the few profitable last-mile distribution companies out there, Frontier Markets, to help other organizations that leverage last-mile networks get closer to profitability and further their (gender) impact via the #SheLeadsImpactFund. Read on for more!
🚀 Bridging the Last-Mile Gap: Empowering Rural Women and Communities with the #SheLeadsImpactFund 🚀 Did you know that over 3.7 billion people worldwide live on less than $6.85/day, with most residing in underserved rural areas across Asia and Africa? These communities face extreme challenges in accessing basic goods and services like clean water, electricity, healthcare, and financial services. These communities pay higher prices for lower-quality products simply because they lack the distribution networks urban areas benefit from. Further, women in these areas rarely have access to formal jobs, and cultural norms give them fewer opportunities to move to urban areas. As a result, they are disproportionately affected by this access gap. 💡That’s why we’re excited to launch the #SheLeadsImpactFund (SLIF)—an initiative co-led by Frontier Innovations Foundation (FIF) and Hystra to transform last-mile distribution networks. #SLIF aims to enable rural areas to access beneficial goods and services, while empowering local women as agents of change! 💪 💥 The rural market potential is HUGE! In India alone, the rural market for fast-moving consumer goods hit $38.5 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach $220 billion by 2027. But while products like soft drinks and soaps find their way into remote villages, innovative and life-changing solutions—like clean energy, healthcare, and financial services—remain out of reach due to distribution and trust challenges. 👩🌾 Women are particularly impacted. They’re often the main decision-makers for household spending but have less access to the labor market, earning 24% less than their male counterparts in LMICs. They are often also overlooked as both consumers and economic drivers: the reality is that closing the gender gap could boost GDP by nearly 8% in emerging markets! 📈 🔑 SLIF will address these challenges by: ✅ Supporting 3 last-mile distributors with tech, funding, and training over 3 years. ✅ Helping them increase annual sales by $10M+ each. ✅ Doubling the income of 9,000+ local agents, with a focus on empowering women. ✅ Attracting $6M+ in additional investments for these ventures to scale their efforts. 💡 The future of rural communities—and the women within them—depends on better access to essential goods, services, and economic opportunities.
