👉 We need to update mainstream financial #accounting from its 19th century roots and 20th century shareholder-predominant views to realign shareholders, stakeholders and society, says Luis Rafael Perera-Aldama, INSEAD's first executive-in-residence. 💡 Read more in the INSEAD Knowledge article here below on "Accounting for Sustainability" by Emeritus Professor Luk Van Wassenhove! #SDGs #Sustainability
If #sustainability is left in the periphery, it will, at best, be an afterthought. How can we make the change towards a more sustainable world if the reports used to communicate business performance remain unchanged? Accounting reports could well be the means to social balance by influencing the distribution of income, wealth and power – if we dare challenge their current architecture. We need to update mainstream financial #accounting from its 19th century roots and 20th century shareholder-predominant views to realign shareholders, stakeholders and society, says Luis Rafael Perera-Aldama, INSEAD's first executive-in-residence. This requires a paradigm change in how we view a company’s performance and the value it creates – not only for shareholders, but also for society, according to INSEAD emeritus professor Luk Van Wassenhove. Essentially, it is really about reshaping the social contract between business and society. Read Accounting for Sustainability here: https://lnkd.in/eigMvHUq #businessasaforceforgood #SDGs

How could wind farm operators avoid creating an environmental and economic disaster in the longer term? This is a question that the authors Sam Aflaki, Professor Atalay Atasu, and Emeritus Pofessor Luk N. Van Wassenhove address in the following Harvard Business Review article "The Long-Term Costs of Wind Turbines". Wind energy is experiencing a boom, but in a pattern eerily reminiscent of the nineteenth century Pennsylvania oil boom, wind farms are building ever larger turbines to farm wind energy further and further from shore. This trend carries risks, especially as turbines come with largely hidden costs. Increasing evidence suggests that although larger turbines can capture more energy, at a certain point the costs of maintaining and decommissioning large turbines located far offshore will outweigh the benefits of that energy capture. 👉 If wind farm operators are to avoid creating an environmental and economic disaster in the longer term, they need to begin factoring realistic maintenance and decommissioning costs into their projections. ♻ How to achieve circularity? More and more manufacturing companies are talking about what’s often called the circular economy in which businesses can create supply chains that recover or recycle the resources used to create their products. Shrinking their environmental footprint, trimming operational waste, and using expensive resources more efficiently are certainly appealing to CEOs. But creating a circular business model is challenging and taking the wrong approach can be expensive. INSEAD Professor Atalay Atasu, Celine Dumas, and INSEAD Emeritus Professor Luk N. Van Wassenhove, argue that success depends on many factors, but perhaps the most important is choosing a strategy that aligns with the company’s capabilities and resources and addresses the constraints on its operations. In the following Harvard Business Review article, "The Circular Business Model - Pick a Strategy that Fits Your Resources and Capabilities”, the authors identify the three basic strategies to achieve circularity and offer a tool to help manufacturers identify which is most likely to be economically sustainable. 👉 Read more about their recommendations drawn on decades of research and consulting with dozens of manufacturers across the world. https://lnkd.in/dYxnKp3 #insead #sustainability #circulareconomy
