The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development will deliver the science we need for the ocean we want.

À propos

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (Ocean Decade) will stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyse new opportunities for sustainable development. The vision of the Ocean Decade is ‘the science we need for the ocean we want’. The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to achieve a better understanding of the ocean system, and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda. The UN General Assembly mandated UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to coordinate the preparations and implementation of the Decade.

JUST PUBLISHED: The State of the Global Climate 2024 report, published by the World Meteorological Organization, outlines that clear signs of human-induced climate change reached new heights in 2024, which was likely the first calendar year to be more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial era. It also shows that sea-level rise and ocean warming are irreversible for hundreds of years and underlines that, amid global warming, early warnings and climate services are vital to protect communities and economies. Key ocean insights include:  🔹 In 2024, ocean heat content reached the highest level in the 65-year observational record. Over the past eight years, each year has set a new record for ocean heat content. 🔹 The rate of ocean warming over the past two decades is more than twice that observed over the period 1960–2005. 🔹 Acidification of the ocean surface has continued over the past 39 years. 🔹 In 2024, global mean sea level reached a record high in the satellite record (from 1993 to present). The rate of global mean sea-level rise in the past 10 years was more than twice the rate of sea-level rise in the first decade of the satellite record (1993–2002). 🔹 The 18 lowest Arctic sea-ice extent minima in the satellite record all occurred in the past 18 years. The G7 Future of the Seas and Ocean Initiative working group brings together government representatives and scientists from G7 nations and the European Union to address ocean issues where coordinated joint actions are needed to advance global ambitions. Co-chaired by Canada and France and coordinated by EU4OceanObs, a Decade Implementing Partner, this working group has recently released its 2025 priorities, which are the ocean science areas where the group will seek to strengthen national actions and international cooperation: 1️⃣ Augmented observing and forecasting for marine life 2️⃣ Arctic Ocean observing 3️⃣ Digital twins of the ocean capacity 4️⃣ Global ocean monitoring indicators 5️⃣ Governance, coordination, and sustained funding for the observing system 6️⃣ Ocean carbon 7️⃣ OneArgo, an initiative endorsed by the #OceanDecade that aims to transform the revolutionary ‘core’ Argo array, which tracks the upper ocean physical state, to one that includes the polar oceans and marginal seas, extending to the full ocean depth and including ocean biogeochemical measurements 8️⃣ Marine research infrastructures integration and harmonization 9️⃣ Support for the World Ocean Assessment Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eERAKFRv

A mystery mollusc, a worm mimicking a nudibranch, and an anglerfish with two lures: meet some of the weird and wonderful new marine species discovered last year, published today in the World Register of Marine Species' top-10 marine species of 2024! Led by VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute, the World Register of Marine Species is an #OceanDecade endorsed project that aims to complete a full taxonomic overview of all marine life, thereby not only supporting scientists but everyone who makes use of species names, including policy, industry and the public at large. Each of these marine species has a story. This top-ten list is just a small highlight of on average 2,000 fascinating new marine species discovered every year. In 2024, over 3,200 marine species were described and added to WoRMS, including some 610 fossil species. IOC-UNESCO Consultant | UN Ocean Decade ECOP Programme Global Coordinator

2025 is already in full swing with a very strong focus on the UN Ocean Conference happening in Nice this June. As Global Coordinator of the UN Ocean Decade Programme for Early Career Ocean Professionals now is a very busy and interesting period to plan our presence there, co-design side events and finalize our internal projects so that we can be best prepared to engage and promote the ECOP Programme agenda during UNOC. We saw a significant increase in our membership, nodes, and partnership opportunities last year - and this infographics below can perfectly attest to that. With elevated support for the youth and early career researchers in general around the world, I am positive that in Nice we will be able to further expand our connections and partnerships. 💡 Here are a few ideas how to connect with us in Nice: ➡️ I am planning to attend both the One Ocean Science Congress and UNOC and will be happy to personally meet you to discuss how we can partner to support our international network of over 6,000 ECOPs in 163 countries with 6 regional and 50+ national coordination teams. ➡️ If you are looking for ECOPs to speak at your event, from a certain country or working on a specific topic, let me know and we can recommend someone for you. ➡️ At the One Ocean Science Congress, we are organizing a town hall called "Capacity Development in the UN Ocean Decade ECOP Programme: successes, challenges, and ways forward". We welcome all of you to join us for this important discussion on capacity development and barriers for its uptake (date to be announced later). ➡️ We are involved in preparation of applications for several other events and are looking for partners for side events either in the blue or green zone of UNOC. We have a strong interest in speaking or being involved in events on capacity development, ocean literacy, intergenerational dialogue, geographical and intersectoral inclusivity and organization of networks (we have a lot to share on this!). Please reach out to me if you would like to discuss any of these items or new ideas :) Looking forward to meeting you in person in Nice!
