🌍🌿 Happy International Mangrove Day! 🌿🌍 Today, we celebrate mangrove forests – unique coastal ecosystems found in tropical and subtropical regions. These remarkable forests are made up of salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that thrive where land meets the sea. 🌱🌊 Why do mangroves matter? 1. 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐬: Mangroves provide essential habitat for countless species of fish 🐟 and crustaceans 🦀. 2. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: They are efficient carbon sinks, helping to combat climate change. 🌞🌱 3. 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬: Mangroves protect our shorelines from erosion, storm surges, and tsunamis. 🌊🏝️ 4. 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: They help filter out certain pollutants, keeping our waters cleaner. 🚯🌿 5. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐇𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐬: Home to diverse species, including birds 🦜 and even tigers 🐅. 6. 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: Millions of people rely on mangroves for their livelihoods, from fishing to tourism. Despite their importance, mangroves are still degraded and fragmented in many countries. Covering about 150,000 km² today, their global area has decreased by nearly 20% until the late 2000s. Though still threatened by intensive shrimp farming, wood extraction, and urban development, protective measures and awareness have slowed their decline. Sensitive to sea-level changes and extreme climatic events, mangroves are on the front line of ecosystems threatened by the climate crisis. Let’s appreciate and protect these vital ecosystems today and every day! 🌏💚 #InternationalMangroveDay #MangroveForests #Biodiversity 📷: Timothy K

🌎 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦, 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦! Biological diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms, but it also includes genetic differences within each species — for example, between varieties of crops and breeds of livestock — and the variety of ecosystems (lakes, forest, deserts, agricultural landscapes) that host multiple kind of interactions among their members (humans, plants, animals). Biological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. Fish provide 20 per cent of animal protein to about 3 billion people. Over 80 per cent of the human diet is provided by plants. As many as 80 per cent of people living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant‐based medicines for basic healthcare. Yet, with nearly one million plant and animal species currently under threat, the ripple effect of the extinction of a single species can affect countless others, disrupting vital ecological functions. As this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us, we are all “Part of the Plan” – we all have a role to play. Governments, Indigenous peoples, business, financial institutions, local and regional authorities, civil society and academia must work together to value, protect and restore biodiversity in a way that benefits everyone. #WorldBiodiversityDay #Karma #PartOfThePlan

Today is World Bee Day 🐝 🐝 🐝 There are 20,000 species of bees in the world. Wild bees are much less known, studied and protected than their cousin Apis mellifera, the honey bee, which is closely monitored because it is exploited and an entire economy depends on its health. Yet, almost 75% of all cultivated species in the world depends on pollinators. But bee populations are declining due to pesticides, habitat destruction, climate change, and parasites introduced by humans. To protect them, intensive agriculture must be replaced with environmentally-friendly models. Take the quizz to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eGPmUaNn

🌎 Today is Earth Day, a time to reflect on the incredible diversity of life on our planet and what we can do to protect it. Biodiversity - the variety of living species on Earth - is essential for the health of our ecosystems and the well-being of all life, including humans. 🐝 🐘 🐳 🌿 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 Biodiversity provides us with food, clean air and water, medicines, and countless other benefits. It also helps regulate the climate, prevent soil erosion, and pollinate our crops. When biodiversity is lost, ecosystems become less resilient and less able to adapt to changes like climate change. ☣ 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 Unfortunately, human activities like habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing, and the introduction of invasive species are causing biodiversity to decline at an alarming rate. It's estimated that up to 1 million species are at risk of extinction in the coming decades. ✊ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 This Earth Day, take action to protect biodiversity in your own community. Plant native species in your garden, support sustainable agriculture, reduce your plastic use, and advocate for conservation efforts. Together, we can ensure a thriving, biodiverse planet for generations to come. And of course you can use KARMA and its Learn & Act news feed to take action on a daily basis! 📷: Nicolas Reusens #EarthDay #Biodiversity #Conservation #SustainableLiving #AnimalProtection

Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered species of tiger found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Known for their distinctive dark orange fur with thick black stripes, these tigers are the smallest of all tiger species 🐯 It is the only surviving tiger population in the Sunda Islands, where the #Bali and #Javan tigers are extinct. Major threats -all linked to human activities- include habitat loss due to expansion of palm oil plantations and planting of acacia plantations, prey-base depletion, and illegal trade. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect the remaining population of Sumatran tigers and their natural habitat from further decline. 📷 Steve Winter from @Big Cat Voices #sumatrantiger #tiger #conservation #biodiversity #bigcats
