What if a company could rewrite reality to cover its tracks? Since 2021, we have been working with local partners to try to protect the Okavango River Basin from Canadian oil company ReconAfrica.'s The company's recent activities in Namibia have raised serious concerns. Their actions don’t just call into question the integrity of the company and its promises to shareholders. They threaten the Okavango River Basin, its biodiversity and the livelihoods of the millions of people that depend on it. 🔴 Questionable oil discovery claims: In April 2021, ReconAfrica announced "clear evidence of a working petroleum system" in Namibia’s Kavango region. But prior assessments gave only a 3.3% chance of finding recoverable oil or gas. 🔴 Shift in extraction narratives: Originally pushing for unconventional extraction (fracking), ReconAfrica changed its tune only after Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy stated that fracking wouldn’t be allowed. 🔴 Influence on investor communications: An August 2022 email from ReconAfrica's VP of Investor Relations to Discord moderators and select investors suggests potential manipulation of information shared with investors. 🔗 Read the full exposé by SOUL: https://lnkd.in/e5YWSJBS #OkavangoDelta #ReconAfrica #EnvironmentalJustice #Namibia #SaveTheOkavango

🌎 New, first-of-its-kind, formalized territory set to safeguard the Yuri-Passé isolated Indigenous group in the Colombian Amazon. By formalizing this 3.2-million-acre (1.3-million-hectare) territory, Colombia is taking a key step toward the protection of the rights and territory of Indigenous Peoples Living in Isolation, also effectively safeguarding the threatened wildlife that share their home. 🙌 This includes the threatened Oncilla, Giant Armadillo and Giant Anteater. “Indigenous Peoples Living in Isolation live in some of the most intact forests in the world,” said Dr. Lina Valencia, Re:wild Andean countries manager. “We are proud to be a part of a coalition of partners supporting the titling of over 7.4 million acres (3 million hectares) of Indigenous territories in Colombia, and the rights and self determination of Indigenous groups.” 👏 This accomplishment was made possible thanks to a collaboration between the Colombia government, the National Organization of Indigenous Peoples of the Colombian Amazon (OPIAC), and the Indigenous communities of the Puré River Region, with technical assistance from the Amazon Conservation Team and financial contributions from the Andes Amazon Fund, Art into Acres, Re:wild and Bezos Earth Fund. 📸: Amazon Conservation Team OPIAC Comunica, Amazon Conservation Team , Bezos Earth Fund , Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia. Macquarie Harbour has been confirmed as a #KeyBiodiversityArea, and will be included on the KBA global website next week. Home to the Maugean Skate, and many other unique species, the government has chosen short term commercial gains for foreign salmon farming companies over the long-term protection of our incredible Tasmanian World Heritage listed wilderness for the benefit of generations to come. By stripping the Environment Minister of her powers to conserve species, we condemn this species to extinction and break the government's commitment to zero extinctions.
URGENT: This week the Australian government will decide the fate of Macquarie Harbor and has an opportunity to shut down destructive industrial non-native salmon farms, protecting the Maugean Skate! This shallow estuary off the Tasmanian coast is one of the most important places in the world - now designated as a #KeyBiodiversityArea - which means it's essential for the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity. Help save the #MaugeanSkate - https://lnkd.in/e3MYJzyd - your action can prevent the extinction of this unique species and protect this wilderness from destruction. Bob Brown Foundation

Happy #worldfrogday! Big congratulations to Trevor Ritland and Kyle Ritland on their upcoming book, The Golden Toad: An Ecological Mystery and the Search for a Lost Species, published by Diversion Books This gripping story returns to the cloud forests of Costa Rica where the Golden Toad, now Extinct, was last seen in the wild in 1989. But in 1991 there was a reported Golden Toad sighting. The book follows Trevor and Kyle’s journey—guided by naturalists, biologists, and local legends—as on an expedition that was the first to ever return to the spot where Eladio Cruz, a local naturalist, saw Golden Toads after they were thought to have gone Extinct. Re:wild was proud to support the expedition in 2021 that documented how local communities in Monte Verde keep the Golden Toad's memory alive and the unexpected hope of seeing other frog species that have been hard hit by the chytrid fungus still hanging on. The book launches June 17, 2025—pre-order now and be part of the search: https://lnkd.in/e_4y8eh8 #Conservation #GoldenToad #LostSpecies #Biodiversity #Rewild
