This meme may be tongue-in-cheek, but for many it will be all too relatable. Just as ESG teams begin to have a good handle on SFDR and PAI reporting, the regulation is set to change... Consultations were held last year and, just last week, the ESAs published a joint opinion giving their recommendations for the new and improved SFDR. Amongst other things, the ESAs: 👉 Recommend the introduction of actual sustainability and transition focused financial product categories, to replace the Article 8 and 9 de facto categories; 👉 Suggest introducing a grading scale to reflect product categories - almost like a nutri-score for financial products; 👉 Suggest that “sustainable investment” under SFDR and Taxonomy-aligned investment under the EU Taxonomy could exist in parallel, given the difference in the approach between the two regulations (i.e. principles-based vs science-based); and 👉 Again emphasised the need to extend the EU Taxonomy to cover social sustainability. Like Alice faced with conflicting signposts, these recommendations may not necessarily represent the true path forward though - that will only start to become clear when the European Commission publishes their proposed reforms. Keeping up to date with regulatory changes can be a real headache, particularly while trying to ensure compliance with the requirements already in place.
