Delivering space equipment in just a few weeks. Why such a constraint and how is it possible? 🚀 The lead time and the ability to deliver satellite equipment, including star trackers, has now come down drastically, driven by the changing economic constraints of NewSpace. 🛰️ For its Auriga™ star tracker, Sodern chose not to use components from space-qualified Hi-Rel foundries, but automotive grade components. This decision guarantees that customers have access to a competitive product based on a supply chain that is experienced with high volumes and short lead times. 📈 In order to meet the specific requirements of space programs, every component used on the Auriga™ star tracker is submitted to a comprehensive upscreening procedure. What criteria should be used to evaluate the radiation resistance of star trackers? ☢️ Radiation resistance is a crucial factor for the longevity of space related equipment, often expressed by the level of tolerance to the total ionizing dose in krad Is it really all there is to it? 👩🔬 👨🔬 In fact, this measurement alone does not guarantee the overall resistance to radiation effects. For most missions lasting less than 15 years, the limiting factor with the greatest impact on star tracking performance will be proton-induced displacement damage on the image sensor. Thanks to its appropriate and powerful image pre-processing algorithms mitigating the effects of displacement damage, Auriga™ will, in most cases, be the best option. We certainly don't want future Moon explorers to get lost! I was very happy to have the opportunity to pitch Sodern autonomous Lunar positioning system this morning, combining or star tracking technology with inertial units, during the last day at IAC Milan. Lunar positioning and navigation will be a great challenge for future exploration mission, but there is a great community of engineers preparing the future!
