🚀 Startech 2024 – 5 days of workshops and international collaboration! Startech 2024, organized under the #UNIVERSEH consortium and supported by the NAWA project took place 30.09-4.10.2024 at AGH University of Krakow. 26 students from 7 countries - France, Poland, Sweden, Germany, Ukraine, Italy, and Luxembourg took part in the event! 🌍 The students had the opportunity to collaborate on innovative projects utilizing satellite data. The teams were introduced to satellite data by Dr. Michał Lupa (CTK AGH). Under the guidance of Dr. Justyna Topolska (AGH) and Prof. Peter Törlind (LTU), and with the support of Prof. Fabrizio Quadrini (TorVergata), they developed business models utilizing selected satellite data applications for Earth-based use cases. Six applications were created: - An app for pet owners, suggesting potential walking paths based on surface temperature; - An app for travelers, recommending clothing sets according to weather conditions; - An app for drivers, notifying them of potential road obstacles; - An app for farmers, optimizing fertilizer and water management; - An app for forest owners, monitoring the condition of their forests; - An app for people at risk of flooding, assisting in efficient evacuation. During "Demo Day", the projects were presented to a jury, including Jarek Chojnacki (ESA Technology Broker Poland) and Dr. Michał Lupa (STC AGH). Winning projects: - 1st place – PAW SHIELD – an app for pet owners, - 2nd place – Wearther – an app for travelers, - 3rd place – Ground wise – an app for farmers. #WorldSpaceWeek 2024 The beginning of the World Space Week coincided with the grand, ceremonial opening of the new D-3 building, which will house the Space Technology Centre, responsible for coordinating the UNIVERSEH European University project on behalf of the AGH University of Krakow. It can’t be just a coincidence!  The new building will feature a range of new laboratories, where research groups, focused on various fields related to space technologies, will conduct their studies. The building will include, among others:  🌟 Analog Astronaut Missions Laboratory - the Habitat. #worldspaceweek 2024 Creating future lunar missions. Akshata Raut, a Space Master student at Luleå University of Technology, recently participated in the prestigious Space Station Design Workshop at the Technical University of Munich. Alongside 42 global participants, Raut helped develop a lunar infrastructure plan that could support 25 astronauts by 2050 and 75 by 2070, with surplus fuel production and partial Earth independence by 2070. Raut worked as a Radiation Subsystem Engineer, using NASA’s OLTARIS software to assess radiation shielding for astronauts. Despite the workshop's intense challenges, including a scheduled all-nighter, she found the experience deeply educational and rewarding. Her team delivered comprehensive design reviews, a 3D model, and presentations, refining her adaptability and teamwork. Though her team narrowly missed winning, Raut's experience solidified her passion for space exploration and strengthened her career ambitions. This year’s #worldspaceweek is on the topic of Space & Climate Change 🚀🍀 Celebrating the transformative impact of space technology in our ongoing battle against climate change, emphasizing the proactive role #spaceexploration plays. Although this year’s World Space Week draws special attention to this important topic, it has nevertheless always been a crucial topic for life on earth. Thus, the European Space Agency - ESA started their own #CCI (Climate Change Initiative). 👉 What is ESA’s Climate Change Initiative about? #ESA develops a suite of satellite data records of key components of the climate system, known as Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). Scientists use these to study climate drivers, interactions and feedback, as well as reservoirs, tipping points and fluxes of energy, water and carbon. These climate-quality datasets are a major contribution to the evidence base used to understand climate change and to predict the future, which drives international action. Expert #scienceteams drawn from all ESA Member States undertake research to generate the CCI ECVs that track changes across the world’s oceans, atmosphere and land. 🙌 Thanks to the CCI, around 650 peer-reviewed research papers have been published.
