The right food is essential for learning and development. 🍲 Parents and caregivers should prioritise feeding children with nutritious foods that will keep them energized and prepared to engage in learning activities. A well-balanced diet plays an important role in ensuring that children have the energy and focus they need for a successful and productive school term. Prioritising their health and well-being as they head back to school will help them thrive both academically and physically. #BackToSchool #HealthyChild

Ghana’s LEAP 1000 #SocialProtection programme was piloted in 2015 to improve children’s nutrition and wellbeing, beyond reducing poverty. It provided cash transfers and access to health insurance to low-income households with pregnant women and infants under 12 months of age. After seven years of implementation, a new #ImpactEvaluation estimated programme effects in 2022. While there were #longterm impacts on several outcomes such as poverty reduction, enrolment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and children’s literacy, some outcomes were not affected, such as food security, children’s health, and child labour. Programmatic recommendations include: · Strengthen LEAP implementation aspects, such as regularity of cash transfer payments. · Further support and simplify enrolment in NIHS, for instance by extending the validity of enrolment beyond one year or by using remote (digital) renewal. · Improve caregivers’ and children’s awareness on the benefits of schooling and the hazards of child labour, including through social and behavioural change sensitization or ‘coaching’. · Strengthen the supply of quality schooling at all levels, including early childhood. · Implement agriculture-related strategies supporting the modernization of agriculture and securing adequate adult wages.
