Introducing Our New Three-Part Series, ‘Food Matters: The Agriculture Sector’s Urgent Climate Challenge’ Emissions reductions cannot be discussed without addressing the agriculture and food sector. As one of the oldest industries on Earth, agriculture has undergone significant changes in the last 50 years — from innovations in farming practices to the rising volumes needed for a growing population, and the escalating impact on our environment and climate. What can businesses do to forge a sustainable way forward? The first article in the series explores: ➤ Agriculture’s key stakeholders and their sources of emissions ➤ The importance of adopting a commodity approach to emissions reduction ➤ Why tackling Scope 3 is so important in the sector Thanks to our co-authors Sam Nunn, who leads RESET's commercial strategy, and Joe Poon, RESET's agriculture subject matter expert, for exploring these critical issues. The first paper in our white paper series, “A Stitch in Time: Decarbonizing the Apparel Industry”, looks at Marginal Abatement Cost Curves (MAC Curve), a valuable tool in the field of environmental economics and policy that illustrates the cost-effectiveness of different measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Companies have much to gain from its application; it helps greatly in planning and prioritizing suppliers’ emission reduction measures, enables better resources allocation, and optimizes the funds for decarbonization. The benefits are clear — but how do our clients put the MAC Curve to use? To demonstrate its function and wide-reaching potential, we’ve delved in to our action planning project with a large American outdoor apparel and equipment consumer cooperative. The built environment is one of the largest contributors to climate change, with estimates as high as 40% of global emissions. Of this, the vast majority comes from buildings’ energy consumption, with the remainder coming from the manufacturing processes for key building materials such as concrete and steel. In this recent interview we sit down with Raefer Wallis — an architect and longstanding sustainability proponent – to discuss how his business, GIGAbase, is setting a new Standard and a blueprint for regenerative building. ➤ Read the full interview to learn more about how he is driving positive change: https://lnkd.in/gZHa4iZ8

RESET's new partnership with Rick Lambell and the Beyond Sustainable Retail team combines Beyond's top-notch strategy, sourcing and materials expertise with RESET's Asian supply chain carbon solutions for brands and retailers in Australia and New Zealand. The idea here is to be able to deliver a full SBTi-level solution to companies who are looking harder at their scope 3 emissions performance. For apparel in particular we look forward to introducing Australian and New Zealand brands into the collaborative programs we have developed with Cascale and the Apparel Impact Institute and take advantage of these standardised methodologies to reduce supplier engagement fatigue and align on supplier asks with other big global buyers. #BeyondSustainableRetailGroup #RESETCarbon #SustainableFashion
Exciting News: RESET Carbon and Beyond Sustainable Retail Group Join Forces to Decarbonize Apparel and Textiles in Australia and New Zealand! Together with Beyond Sustainable Retail Group, RESET Carbon is on a mission to drive deep decarbonization in the retail sector as new climate disclosure regulations come into force in 2025. Why this partnership matters: - Less than 10% of apparel and textile companies in Australia and New Zealand have set science-based targets - Nearly two-thirds of apparel and textile companies have no clear plans for tackling their scope 3 emissions - Legislation has come into force which will soon mandate the disclosure of these This is where our partnership steps in! RESET Carbon’s leadership in supply chain decarbonization, combined with Beyond’s deep retail expertise and established relationships, creates a powerful solution to help retailers meet these urgent challenges. 💬 "Effective supply chain decarbonization requires informed brand strategy. We’re excited to work with Beyond Sustainable Retail Group, leveraging their deep retail and sustainable supply chain experience," said Liam Salter, Founder and CEO of RESET Carbon. 💬 "RESET has been a pioneer in supply chain decarbonization in Asia. Our industry isn’t yet going far enough, fast enough. As we approach COP29, the urgency for the consumer goods industry to tackle climate change has never been clearer. Emissions from the textile and apparel sector are set to surge, primarily concentrated in just nine countries, including China and India. I invite you to read my latest piece in the South China Morning Post, where I delve into why our planet's future—and the sustainability of our industry—depends on focused, strategic action, and doing more together, where it matters most. https://lnkd.in/eAUZFssj

What drives people to throw out the rule book and find new, innovative ways to revolutionise the way their industry works? That’s what we aim to find out in our interview series, Chatting with Changemakers. In our second instalment, we spoke with the architect of the world’s first carbon-neutral hotel, and GIGA Founder and CEO, Raefer Wallis. Determined to raise the bar for sustainable buildings, Wallis produced a new standard focused on performance-based scoring of issues called the ‘RESET®’ standard (Regenerative Ecological, Social and Economic Targets). Aimed at clients who want to go the extra mile on sustainability, its ultimate aim is to drive continuous improvements in performance standards for buildings across the world. For Wallis, it’s the quantifying that counts, and he’s unapologetic about it: “Pretty much all the building standards out there are prescriptive… if you do certain things, you get a badge, but nobody comes in to measure the actual outcome. RESET is a performance-based standard, so we come in and say, let’s set a goal, and we’re going to measure your outcomes, and that’s all that’s going to matter… are you hitting the performance targets or not?” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gZHa4iZ8 #SustainableBuilding #BuiltEnvironmentInnovation #Changemakers

**Preparing for Taiwan’s Carbon Fee Roll-Out** Calling all Taiwan based companies to set reduction targets and take action! At the end of August, the Ministry of Environment officially announced three key regulations for the carbon fee system, outlining the coverage, timeline, and reduction targets eligible for preferential rates. The carbon fees will initially be imposed on power and manufacturing industries that are regulated by the EPA and emit over 25,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. The carbon fees will start to be calculated in 2025, with actual payments starting in 2026. The initial fees are set to be NT$300 per ton, increasing gradually to between NT$1,200 and NT$1,800 by 2030. There is set to be 281 companies (500 facilities) in the first batch which will account for 54% of overall emissions in Taiwan. Key Highlights of the Regulation: ➤ Companies are allowed to deduct any carbon credits they have accrued from voluntary reduction projects from the carbon fees however this is limited to a maximum of 10% of their total emissions. Thus, companies must still prioritize decarbonization efforts to mitigate the impact of the carbon fees. ➤ Companies that set science-based targets (SBT) can qualify for a discounted rate of NT$50 per ton, and those setting industry-specific reduction plans in line with the carbon fee regulations will receive a discounted rate of NT$100 per ton. However, with global carbon pricing on the rise, early preparation is essential to avoid escalating operational costs. ➤ Businesses not yet subject to carbon fees should begin emissions tracking and reduction planning to stay ahead of future requirements. The Taiwan Carbon Solution Exchange (TCX), launched in early October, will allow companies participating in voluntary reduction projects (with verified results of companies’ reduction actions) to trade their carbon credits for economic returns. 🌍🌱 Immediate action on carbon reduction is critical—acting early not only mitigates future carbon-related risks but also fosters sustainability. Drop us a comment below if you would like support with developing your carbon reduction strategies and SBTs! #CarbonFee #CarbonReduction #SBTi #ClimateChange #SustainableDevelopment

Last week I was lucky enough to be on the judging panel for the 2024 Stelliers Asia event which presents individual awards to leading hoteliers across the region. Stelliers' differentiator is that they aren't just looking at the leadership teams but are focused on recognising outstanding individuals across the entire business - so this includes the housekeepers, engineers, front of house and all the other roles needed to keep a hotel operation running smoothly. Joining a judging panel of experienced industry insiders as the 'greenie' reminded me that if we environmentalists want to get proper traction, we need to get beyond aspirational goals and go deeper into the weeds to understand how our issues play into the other priorities faced by busy business teams in challenging markets. Take for example the challenge of converting corporate level carbon goals into business cases and KPIs that can be embraced and executed by people who spend most of their lives focused on something else. The good news is that when we do break issues like climate, plastics and water down to the operational level, most people get it and they want to engage. There were literally dozens of examples of this in the Stelliers awards and most of them were not in the 'CSR' category either. Hoteliers are a tough, fearless bunch - they pride themselves on their integrity, creativity, people skills and their ability to get the job done in difficult and unpredictable circumstances. If they can get their industry through COVID, maybe we can all work together to get it through climate change...... Thanks to Stephane de Montgros, Simon Hansson Yu, Jennifer Cronin, Simon Kahn, James W McBride and Yona He Poda, MBA for a couple of very insightful and inspiring days!
The much-anticipated celebration has come to a close, and we are delighted to announce the Stelliers Asia 2024 award winners! The Stelliers Asia 2024 Grand Awards Ceremony was nothing short of spectacular, filled with well-deserved recognition, a vibrant atmosphere, and countless opportunities to reconnect those who consistently and continuously pour their heartfelt passion into service. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made this evening unforgettable, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists this year. It was truly a night to remember, and we eagerly look forward to celebrating the excellence of the hotel industry with you in the future! https://lnkd.in/g6-ZA_vJ View the full Stelliers Asia 2024 Winners List 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/gJrF8DzT #Stelliers #StelliersAsia2024 #StelliersAsia #HospitalityExcellence
