🐏 New project to examine Irish wool and scouring: The three-year project, Regenerative Value Systems for Irish Grown Wool in Ireland (REVEIRE), has received €657,403 in funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland Research Call Awards. Led by Dr Archishman Bose, University College Cork, the project aims to demonstrate how Irish wool can contribute to sustainability beyond net-zero targets. The data from this project will support future wool research and guide policies and investments to regenerate the wool industry in Ireland. It is hoped that it will also empower consumers to make informed choices about sustainable products, fostering the growth of bio-based businesses. 📚 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e6YHU54D Richard O'Shea Jerry D Murphy Helena McMahon Tim Yeomans MaREI

🦅An analysis of a 30,000-year-old fossil vulture from Central Italy has revealed that volcanic rock can preserve microscopic details in feathers - the first ever record of such a preservation. Led by Dr. Valentina Rossi, School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences, an international team discovered a new mode of soft tissue preservation in ash-rich volcanic sediments. The feathers are preserved in a mineral phase called zeolite, a phenomenon not previously reported. Found in 1889 near Rome, the fossil vulture's entire body was preserved with remarkable detail, including eye lids and wing feathers. This research shows that preservation extends to tiny microscopic feather pigment structures. 🔍 The study was published in the journal 'Geology' 📚 https://lnkd.in/exUHf7wP Maria McNamara Dawid A.
