Yesterday, we welcomed Stripe Co-Founder John Collison to Dogpatch Labs, he shared openly about his founder journey, home truths behind startup success, sage advice on company building, and thoughts on navigating through a changing tech landscape. When asked about his evolution from a hands-on founder to the leader of a large organisation, he emphasised the importance of customer centricity and a ‘boots-on-the-ground’ mindset, especially in the early days of a startup. “Listen to your users. Be hands-on as much as possible. Invite honest feedback, and avoid denial. Then you’ll build something people actually want.” Collison noted that the commonality of super-successful tech giants is an obsession with customers.  "Let the market teach you things. Build, pivot, scale.” John talked about how distraction with the next product and internationalisation is the enemy of early-stage startup founders, saying, “Nail the core product. 🌍 World Mental Health Day 2024 🌍 It is officially 2 months since I joined the team at Dogpatch Labs and the timing could not have been better. One of the most daunting things about switching companies is moving from a familiar and safe company culture into the unknown. Not that I needed to worry, I quickly learnt that the success of Dogpatch as a company is due to the incredible team of people we have behind us. They are the most talented, passionate, hard-working and just pure sound group of people I have ever met. ❤️ I have always believed that the success of any organisation is deeply intertwined with the wellbeing of its people, which is why this year's World Mental Health Day theme: Mental Health at Work 🧠💼 could not be more apt. With this in mind, I was delighted that one of my first tasks as the new People Operations Manager was to launch our partnership with Kara Connect and introduce a modern and innovative solution to our employees wellbeing. By giving our employees access to numerous certified health care professionals, across a range of specialities, we are empowering our employees to take control of their mental and physical wellbeing. I want to give a massive shout out to Joe Keane and the rest of the team at Kara Connect for building us such an impressive Wellbeing Hub and facilitating a seamless roll out to all our employees. And also to our Head of People Jennifer Breathnach for handing over such a rewarding project for my introduction to the company.
