In October, renewables provided over 40% of electricity⚡️ The majority of renewable electricity generated last month came from windfarms, which accounted for just under 35% of all electricity used in Ireland 💨 Total generation from wind energy amounted to 1,003 GWh (Gigawatt hours) over the month, passing the 1,000 GWh mark for the third time ever in an October month. Diarmaid Gillespie, Director of System Operations at EirGrid, said: “We had over 1,000 Gigawatt hours of wind on the system in October, which is the first time this has passed the 1,000 GWh mark since March of this year as the windy weather returns. Whereas grid-scale solar is down from the highs of the summer months, as recently as 2022 we had no solar at all on the transmission system. Our Lead Senior Ecologist, Robert Fennelly, met with representatives from wind developers and other TSOs at the 'Strong Winds, Thriving Seas’ conference in Brussels yesterday. Facilitated by Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCEaN), Renewables Grid Initiative and WindEurope, discussions centred around approaches to protecting our marine and coastal ecosystems while harnessing wind energy 🌊 💨 Over 150 experts across the industry attended the event, which hosted proactive discussions on innovative strategies on how to meet EU wind targets while minimising the impacts on nature and restoring biodiversity 🌱 🌳 EirGrid is integrating innovative low carbon, nature-friendly features into its future offshore grid, to ensure maximum nature protection as it connects Ireland's offshore wind resource ⚡ #Offshore #Renewables #Biodiversity

EirGrid will be holding two pop-up information events to provide members of the public with information on Powering Up Wicklow and the Arklow Station Redevelopment ⚡ With the existing substation in Arklow approaching end of life, the Arklow 220kV Station Redevelopment will see the construction of a replacement transmission substation.
