About us

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation, headquartered in the UK and Ireland, with a growing presence internationally. Part of the FTSE-listed SSE plc, we're taking action as part of SSE's Net Zero Acceleration Programme (NZAP) to increase our installed renewable energy capacity to 9GW by 2027, and over 16GW by 2032. We have an operational portfolio of around 4.5GW of installed onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro generation capacity, with a secured future project pipeline of almost 15GW in development. We're also pursuing a further pipeline of over 13GW of additional prospective sites under development. Our operational portfolio comprises nearly 2GW of onshore wind capacity, more than 1GW of offshore wind capacity, and almost 1.5GW of flexible hydro power and pumped storage capacity. These generation assets produce around 10TWh of renewable power each year. We know offshore wind will be the backbone of a net zero power system so we are building the world's largest offshore wind farm, the 3.6GW Dogger Bank project in the North Sea and, in October 2023, we completed the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, the 1.1GW Seagreen project off the Scottish coast. We're a team of around 1,800 renewable energy professionals based across the UK and Ireland, Continental Europe, and Japan, all committed to delivering the green energy the world needs now and in the future. We've honed our skills through over 15 years of delivering world-leading projects with expertise in project design and optimisation, consenting and stakeholder engagement, financing, procurement, construction, and operations.

Berwick Bank offshore wind farm has the potential to deliver up to 4.1 GW of installed capacity, making it one of the largest offshore opportunities in the world. 🌍 In 2022, a planning application was submitted to the Scottish Government seeking consent to develop and construct Berwick Bank offshore wind farm. If approved for delivery, Berwick Bank could increase Scotland’s overall renewable energy capacity by nearly 30%! ⚡ But what else could that deliver for the UK? 🇬🇧

  • SSE and Gilkes Energy Ltd have submitted a Section 36 planning consent application to Scottish Government Ministers for the proposed joint venture Fearna pumped storage hydro (PSH) project in Scotland’s Highlands. The 50:50 development joint venture project is located at the western end of Glengarry, around 25km west of Invergarry and adjoins our existing Loch Quoich reservoir in the Great Glen hydro scheme. Delivery of the project would be subject to securing planning consent and a final investment decision, including an investible route-to-market. Fearna has a proposed installed capacity of 1.8GW with a stored capacity of up to 36GWh, providing 20hrs of storage and would make it the largest such scheme in the UK if delivered. • We've successfully completed the 28MW Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye Wind Farm in northeast France. 🇫🇷 Located in the Department of Le Marne in the Grand Est region, the project was in development for approximately eight years before we reached our final investment decision in 2023. 📆 Construction began in September 2023, and the project was delivered on time and within budget, with a total capital investment exceeding €30 million. This investment provided a boost to the local economy, supporting around 80 construction jobs at peak activity. 👷♀️ 👷♂️ Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye marks a significant milestone as our first onshore wind project in mainland Europe to enter construction and become operational. The wind farm consists of eight Siemens Gamesa SG 3.4-132 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.4MW, and began generating renewable energy in February 2025. It is expected to operate for up to 35 years. ⚡ In November 2024, we announced that Greensolver, a leading European asset management company, would oversee the wind farm’s day-to-day operations and maintenance. With expertise in Wind, Solar, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Greensolver currently manages over 5GW of renewable energy assets across Europe. 🌍 Watch the video below to learn more about the different phases of the project. 👇

  • Following the inaugural Ireland-UK Summit, we were pleased to engage in discussions with the British Embassy Dublin, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Minister Timmy Dooley on strengthening Ireland-UK cooperation in addressing the energy and climate crises. In particular, we explored opportunities to collaborate on advancing offshore wind development.

Strengthening UK-Ireland energy collaboration 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 Last week’s inaugural UK-Ireland Summit in Liverpool saw our Chief Commercial Officer, Martin Pibworth, join a business roundtable with the Prime Minister Keir Starmer and An Taoiseach Micheál Martin, reinforcing the shared commitment to closer collaboration on energy. To build on this momentum, in partnership with the British Embassy Dublin, we hosted an evening of discussion about the tangible next steps needed to move the dial on the strategic energy partnership between the two countries. The event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and key stakeholders, with remarks from the British Ambassador to Ireland, Paul Johnston, and Minister Timmy Dooley. Our Chief Financial Officer Barry O'Regan reaffirmed our commitment to partnering with both the British and Irish Governments to help tackle common challenges of achieving net zero, improving energy security, and energy affordability. An expert panel made up of Oonagh Buckley, Secretary General, Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications; Sue Harrison, Head of European Energy Markets, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero; Colm Devine, Partner and Power & Utilities Leader UK&I, EY and Noel Cunniffe, CEO, Wind Energy Ireland explored how policy-makers and industry alike can work together to turn ambition into action. 🤝 #UKIESummit

Our largest battery project has hit a major milestone.⚡🔋 Battery units have arrived at our 320MW/640MWh Monk Fryson Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in North Yorkshire – a crucial step towards making it one of the UK’s biggest battery storage sites! ✅ Power over 500,000 homes for two hours during peak demand ✅ Over 6x the size of our operational Salisbury BESS ✅ Expected to be fully operational in early 2026 The batteries, supplied by Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd., are being installed by our principal contractor Morrison Energy Services. Once complete, Monk Fryston will play a key role in strengthening the UK’s grid, enhancing energy security, and accelerating the transition to clean, reliable power. 🌍⚡ Read more about the project below 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ezMXFV7y

SSE Renewables and co-development partner FuturEnergy Ireland have welcomed a positive planning decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission for the development of Gort Uí Rathaile Wind Farm close to the Cork/Kerry border in southwest Ireland. The proposed onshore wind development, which has received consent for 13 turbines and is located approximately 4km from Ballyvourney in North Cork, would support both national and global climate action. • This week, ahead of International Women’s Day, SSE Renewables was proud to support Women in Renewables, an all-female energy conference, alongside SONI Ltd. Organised by RenewableNI, the event brought together 120 delegates to celebrate the incredible contributions of women in Northern Ireland’s renewables sector and to inspire the next generation of women in energy. The theme of the event, ‘STEM Role Models’, highlighted the diverse pathways into renewable energy, showcasing the inspiring journeys of the all-female panel. Our very own Vicky Boden, Senior Community Investment Manager for SSE Ireland, took part in a powerful discussion alongside other industry leaders, sharing her career journey and insights on gender diversity in the energy sector. Key takeaways from the panel:  💡 Female managers across the energy sector play a critical role in championing women in their teams.  💡 Mentoring is essential to supporting and retaining talented women.   💡 It’s important to focus on achievements, and progress to date, in order to inspire the next generation of women in energy. At SSE Renewables we are proud to accelerate action by empowering the women across our organisation. #WomenInRenewables #InternationalWomensDay #AccelerateAction
