About us

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation, headquartered in the UK and Ireland, with a growing presence internationally. Part of the SSE plc group, we have an operational portfolio of around 4GW of onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro generation, with a secured future project pipeline of over 15GW in development. Our operational portfolio comprises nearly 2GW of onshore wind capacity, almost 0.5GW of offshore wind capacity, and almost 1.5GW of flexible hydro power and pumped storage capacity. These generation assets produce around 10TWh of renewable power each year. We're committed to delivering the green energy the world needs now and in the future. Our 15GW+ construction and development pipeline includes 3.8GW of onshore wind, 1.3GW of pumped storage, 1.2GW of solar energy and battery storage, and 8.8GW of offshore wind energy - the largest offshore development pipeline in the UK and Ireland. We know offshore wind will be the backbone of a net zero power system and that's why we're building more offshore wind than any other company in the world right now. This includes the world's largest offshore wind farm, the 3.6GW Dogger Bank project in the North Sea, and the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, the 1.1GW Seagreen project off the Scottish coast. We're a team of around 1,500 renewable energy professionals based across the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, the Netherlands, Japan and the USA. We've honed our skills through over 20 years of delivering world-leading projects with expertise in project design and optimisation, consenting and stakeholder engagement, financing, procurement, construction, and operations.

We recently welcomed representatives from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, British Hydropower Association and National Grid ESO to our proposed Coire Glas site located at Loch Lochy in the Scottish Highlands. ⛰ Our teams were on hand to provide a tour of the exploratory works which included the creation of 1.2km tunnel approximately five metres high and four and a half metres wide which cuts into the hillside around the proposed location of the underground powerhouse complex. ⚡ The proposed Coire Glas pumped storage scheme would have an installed capacity of 1,300MW and be capable of delivering 30GWh of long duration electricity storage – enough to be able to provide firm, flexible renewable power for three million British homes for up to 24 hours non-stop. 🏡 We hope to make a final investment decision on the project in late 2025 or early 2026, allowing for main construction to commence in the second half of 2026, subject to being successful in the administrative allocation of an investable cap and floor mechanism. 🎉 We're celebrating the safe and successful installation of the final onshore turbine at the 28MW Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye Wind Farm in France. 🇫🇷 Turbine installation began this summer and has been delivered on schedule. 📆 The project is our first #onshore wind farm in construction in France and is also the first of our projects to enter construction outside our core UK and Ireland market. 🌍 Commissioning and testing of turbines will now commence and continue until the site becomes fully operational, which is expected by the end of 2024. ⚡ Once operational, the wind farm will be capable of generating enough low-carbon energy over its expected 30-year lifetime to power over 14,000 homes annually. 🏡 Read more about the milestone below 👇 https://lnkd.in/e-MCMHdZ

We care about the communities in which we live and work. To date SSE’s community Investment programme has delivered £88.5m to an array of project across Great Britain and Ireland. In 2023/24 alone, we provided £10.3m of funding to 957 projects within communities. We’re continuing to work with local people to ensure that funding is always going towards community priorities. The benefits range from enhancing community spaces, to supporting young people with their education, to boosting funding for local businesses. Through our community investment funds, we’re ensuring communities are benefitting directly from the clean energy transition – and our contribution will continue to grow year on year as we build out our pipeline of new projects. Hear first-hand how South Lanarkshire based charity, LEAP Project, has helped local communities with funding provided by Clyde Wind Farm, our JV partnership with Greencoat UK Wind PLC and GLIL Infrastructure. 👇 🎥

We’re investing over £20 billion in homegrown solutions, building the world’s largest offshore wind farm, transforming the grid, and creating thousands of quality jobs. We recently completed refurbishment works at Perthshire’s iconic Tummel Bridge Power Station, the £50m project was one of the largest single investments we’ve made to our existing hydro fleet, and clearly supports hydro’s vital role in the path to achieving UK and Scottish net zero carbon emissions targets. 🎯 The hydro station has been a part of the energy landscape for generations and the investment will ensure this iconic and historic site continues to play a crucial role in Scotland’s energy mix for decades to come. We spoke to our Chief Commercial Officer, Martin Pibworth, about the important role Tummel plays in the energy mix and what the future holds for hydro and pumped storage...📹

Commissioned in 1933, Tummel Bridge Power Station is one of the oldest hydro power plants in Scotland. Last week, the hydro station official reopened following a £50m refurbishment programme. 🏗 The project involved the replacement of the station’s two original hydro turbines with new modern runner technology. This new technology increases water flow, enabling the increase in generation output at the plant and extending the hydro power plant’s working life by at least 40 years. 💧 The two-year refurbishment campaign helped support the Scottish regional supply chain and local job creation. During construction, the delivery of the works programme supported around 65 roles at peak, many of which supported local contractors in the Highlands. 👷♂️ 👷♀️ The refurbishment comes at a time when greater emphasis is being placed on the role of hydro power to help Scotland and the wider UK achieve the goals of net zero greenhouse gas emissions. ⚡ Read more about the project below 👇 https://lnkd.in/ePv_SuWR

Thanks to the team at RenewableNI for hosting this important event to get key stakeholders together, with the shared goal of progressing a firm pathway to #offshorewind delivery in Northern Ireland. Our Head of Offshore Consents (Ireland) Eimear Lenehan participated in a panel discussion with industry colleagues Sam McCloskey Niamh Kenny and Brian Hegarty. Top of the agenda was the potential for the region that must be unlocked, and our key asks around certainty of timelines for a leasing round and CfD auction and a firm 1GW offshore wind target for 2032.
