Kingspan MICROHOME 2024/25 2nd Prize Award: Why is living in Hong Kong so exhausting? Grappling with Hong Kong's severe housing crisis caused by high costs and limited land, this project envisions a floating colony of modular, prefabricated microhomes. Designed to be off-grid, sustainable, and energy-independent, it forms a temporary, dynamic micro-city that fosters community interaction and adapts to residents' evolving needs, offering a novel solution to Hong Kong’s housing dilemma. This award-winning entry was authored by Giorgio Maria Martellono, Luca Quadro, Chang Liu and Jacopo Leccia. Modern Family Living in the Woods The villa located in the woodlands outside Aarhus, Denmark, was originally designed and built in the mid-1960s by the architect to serve as both a family home and design studio. It stands as a striking example of modernist architecture, intended to harmonise the building with its natural surroundings, creating a light-filled and spacious living space. This design philosophy has been carefully preserved and enhanced through a recent full-scale renovation. Designer Bruno Jakobsen’s skills have brought new life to this architectural gem. Although the original wooden ceilings could not be saved, they have been replaced with a sustainable acoustic panel that substitutes much of the cement with clay to lower its carbon footprint. The ceilings not only improve the acoustics throughout the home but also enhance the seamless flow of the layout. The ceiling lines run along the north-south axis of the property, an alignment especially noticeable in the spacious, open-plan kitchen and living area.
