This year marks an extraordinary milestone—30 years of Barretstown! Since 1994, this incredible organisation has provided free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and families facing cancer and other serious illnesses. Behind the scenes, 24/7 onsite medical and nursing care supports this safe, healing environment. Over the past three decades, more than 125,000 campers have experienced Barretstown’s unique blend of fun, hope, and healing through its life-changing therapeutic model. At MDO Architects, we were deeply honoured to attend the official opening of the new Med Shed, hosted by U2’s legendary guitarist, The Edge. Our partnership with Barretstown has allowed us to contribute to its inspiring mission, and we’re especially proud of two projects close to our hearts: Elizabeth’s Tree House – A vibrant yet functional restaurant, serving as the heartbeat of the campus. It seamlessly integrates into the wooded landscape, quickly establishing itself a central welcoming hub where everyone gathers, connects, and find joy. Barretstown Lodge – A welcoming, versatile space, accommodating some of the 2,500+ dedicated volunteers needed each year to power Barretstown’s magic. It’s a home away from home, embodying the spirit of generosity and care that makes Barretstown so special. Both projects reflect Barretstown’s ethos—combining thoughtful design with practical function to enhance the therapeutic experience for every camper, family member, and volunteer. Congratulations to Barretstown on 30 remarkable years of changing lives! Here’s to many more decades of making a difference. #MDOArchitects #MDOProjects #Barretstown #30YearsOfBarretstown #ArchitectureWithHeart #CommunityDesign #HealthcareArchitecture #ShapingTheFuture #DesignForGood

If you're traveling into Dublin city from the southside, you may have noticed the striking roofscape of the new apartment block at 143 Merrion Road. This complex roof design wouldn't have been possible without leveraging advanced #3D-modelling through #Revit software. At MDO, we use 3D modelling and Building Information Modelling (#BIM) on all projects, from concept to completion. For this project, BIM was essential in visualising and communicating the design to the broader design and construction team. It played a crucial role in aligning the structure, architecture, and MEP systems, ensuring seamless coordination. One of the primary advantages of BIM was its ability to identify and resolve potential clashes between key disciplines during the design development stage. This proactive approach significantly improved efficiency and reduced conflicts during construction. By visualising these challenges in 3D, all stakeholders gained a clearer understanding of issues facilitating a proactive and informed approach to finding solutions as the design evolved. #MDOArchitects #MDOProjects #IrishArchitecture #coordination #clashdetection Lioncor #MerrionRoad #Apartments #DublinDevelopment #newhomes #newdevelopment Client: Lioncor

Exciting insights from the #DataCentresIreland Conference this week attended by our directors Dan Daye and Martin Spillane. Amongst many interesting talks, Enerpower powered by Greenvolt discussed the innovative reuse of residual energy from the #DataCentre on Airton Road. This energy is harnessed through a #DistrictHeating and cooling system that currently serves several South Dublin County Council (SDCC) public buildings—including a new housing block designed by COADY Architects for SDCC, with MDO Architects involved directly for the Council. Impressively, the system has the potential to serve over 5,000 homes! The SDCC district heating scheme is a bold step forward, showcasing a creative approach to capturing and repurposing excess energy. It highlights how data centres can transform into net-positive contributors to the energy network. With their backup power systems, data centres are uniquely positioned to add to the grid and potentially provide some stability and enhanced energy reliability. Addressing challenges on brownfield sites will be key, but the data centre sector has an incredible opportunity to integrate with local communities by making excess energy available—provided it raises the bar in design and implementation. #MDOArchitects #architectureireland #irisharchitecture #construction #SustainableDevelopment #EnergyInnovation #GreenInfrastructure #CircularDesign Owen Power

This striking pavilion, conceived as a tranquil meeting space in the Founders District, was brought to life by specialist glazing contractor Octatube. The structure features a 7x7x7-meter open-air room, supported by weathered steel columns that echo the organic forms of tree trunks. Designed with meticulous precision using advanced parametric tools, the pavilion's transparent façade and finely detailed framework create an elegant focal point within the office park courtyard. Open year-round, this verdant retreat offers office occupants a refreshing, plant-filled sanctuary—a place to relax and recharge amid the demands of the workday #MDOArchitects #MDOProjects #Octatube #GlassPavilion #BelfieldOfficePark #ArchitectureIreland #SteelAndGlass #CollaborativeDesign
This expressive glass pavilion that leans slightly to one side and is supported by weathered steel trees, serves as a meeting space in an office park courtyard in Dublin. It is characterized by high-quality detailing and materialization, and minimally visible connections. To realise McCauley Daye O'Connell Architects’ design of this 7x7x7m glass box to life, we used parametric tools, to meet all the structural requirements while achieving an optimal balance between aesthetic appeal, transparency and technical feasibility. This resulted in three tree-shaped columns of weathered steel that intertwine into a spaceframe upon which nine glass roof panels rest. Each façade consists of three full-height glass panels. In the corners, we used glass-on-glass connections. This upgrade improved the pavilion’s transparency.
