Last Saturday, NUA SURGICAL were privileged to support a local girls sports team honour the memory of their beloved team mate.   On 5th October 2024, the inaugural Ciara Bowden Memorial Tournament took place in Moycullen, Co Galway. Hosted by the Maigh Cuilinn U14 LGFA coaches and management, the memorial blitz was to commemorate a truly loved and missed teammate. Ciara’s mum Úna and younger sister Saoirse were also remembered on the day. The three members of the Bowden family tragically passed away in a car accident earlier this year, leaving a community in shock and in mourning.   As a special mark of remembrance, the Maigh Cuilinn u14 team were presented with memorial kit comprising a bespoke crest with a tribute to Ciara & Saoirse Bowden. The kit was sponsored by local companies who have an affiliation with the club; NUA SURGICAL, CompanionQMS and Xeinadin Ireland.  Our CEO, Barry Mc Cann is a member of the u14 coaching team and reflects on the company's involvement; "at such a young age, these girls have experienced extreme tragedy within their community and within their circle of friends. Being able to provide them with some kit to keep the memory of their friend alive was a tiny gesture that we were privileged to do".

Founder, CEO, Director of NUA Surgical | Innovating in Women's Health

One of the highlights from the Women's Health Innovation Series #WHIS2024 in Boston this week was getting to spend time with some of our existing investors and update them on our recent progress. One of those is Rachel Butler of the Catalytic Impact Foundation; we are extremely grateful to have a fund backing us that is dedicated to making a positive impact on women's health! It was also a privilege to attend the Boston Women's Health PAC where our Board Chair Dr Elizabeth Garner, Liz Powell and other speakers highlighted the many reasons why we need a bigger focus on women's health. Put simply; when women are healthy, everyone benefits!

Congrats to Brittany Barreto, Ph.D. on the launch of her new book: 'Unlocking Women's Health' I was delighted to get my signed copy today at #WHIS2024 and even more delighted to see that NUA SURGICAL are featured in a chapter. The text is taken from a podcast I did with Brittany and FemTech Focus a few year's ago, and she has been a huge advocate of ours ever since. Well done on your trojan efforts to promote all things #femtech, #womenshealth, #genderequity

Millions of women live in counties in the US that have zero obstetric care. There is no way of putting a positive slant on that fact.

All birthing people have the right to safe, respectful, equitable maternity care. Yet the fact that millions of people of reproductive age in the U.S. live in counties without a SINGLE birthing facility or obstetric care provider is a stark reminder that for too many, this right is not realized. The new March of Dimes report highlights how lack of access to maternal health care remains a significant hurdle in the U.S., and has only worsened following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Every Mother Counts is dedicated to ensuring that all people receive safe, respectful, and equitable care—including the essential access to that care. 🔗 Find the report: https://bit.ly/3XyAvIQ

The US is facing a major challenge with a lack of personnel and facilities to support maternal health services. Jacqueline Howard of CNN recently shared the March of Dimes facts of the maternal health crisis in the US. Hopefully raising awareness in mainstream media will help drive action and change.

The United States is facing an ongoing maternity health crisis in which 1 in every 3 counties does not have a single obstetric clinician, affecting women’s access to care, according to a new report. The report, released by the infant and maternal health nonprofit March of Dimes, says that in many parts of the country, obstetrician/gynecologists and family physicians who deliver babies are leaving the workforce, which worsens access to care. Ob/gyns nationwide delivered more than 85% of babies born in 2022, according to the report, but the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now projects that the nation will face a shortage of 12,000 to 15,000 ob/gyns by 2050. Overall, more than 35% of US counties are considered “maternity care deserts,” which means there is limited or no access to maternity care there, according to March of Dimes.
