Coffey recently visited the manufacturing facility of OxyMem, a DuPont brand in Athlone, where our engineering team were introduced to Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR), a recent breakthrough technology in the water industry.     Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) stands out as an innovative wastewater treatment technology, utilising an attached growth biofilm (fixed film) aeration system. This system facilitates the efficient delivery of oxygen from the membrane carrier side, ensuring minimal energy consumption, a promising solution towards carbon neutrality. Noteworthy advantages of MABR over traditional activated sludge processes include heightened nitrification rates, superior aeration efficiency, and the capability to concurrently execute nitrification and denitrification using poreless gas permeable silicone membrane.     MABR can function as a standalone solution with great advantages compared to CAS, or when used as a retrofit upgrade for existing wastewater treatment plants offers multiple benefits. The technology can be utilised with no operational disruption to processes, making it particularly well-suited for upgrade of existing treatment plants.
