Across roads, greenways, national cycle network, light rail and metro – we keep Ireland moving

About us

Transport Infrastructure Ireland's role as a state agency is to provide sustainable transport infrastructure and services, deliver a better quality of life, support economic growth, and respect the environment. Under the aegis of the Department of Transport, we work at both national and regional level, in partnership with Local Authorities regarding national roads and greenways, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding light rail and metro. TII was established through a merger of the National Roads Authority (NRA) and the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) under the Roads Act 2015, and was set up to deliver and operate safe and efficient light rail and national road networks. In 2021, TII was delegated additional functions in relation to active travel. We are leading the development of an ambitions new National Cycle Network for Ireland on behalf of the Department of Transport. At TII we are building a more sustainable economy and a better quality of life for everyone. • 📗 TII were delighted to host a round table discussion for eolas Magazine yesterday, Ireland’s leading public policy and business magazine which is read by senior decision makers across the public, private and voluntary sectors. This discussion will feature in the March edition. 🚈 The panel explored the theme of ‘Energising future transport: Navigating key infrastructure challenges to meet alternative fuels targets in transport’. The event brought together industry leaders, including Donal Minnock, Head of Alternative Fuels Projects Unit for TII, along with esteemed members from ESB Networks, Coillte, Department of Transport, and Schneider Electric. ⛽ The discussion covered a range of critical topics, once such topic being identifying the single greatest obstacle to delivering the infrastructure necessary for Ireland to meet its mandatory Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) obligations within the given timeframes. The insights shared were invaluable in understanding the complexities and opportunities in this evolving sector.

  • ▶️ Last week TII’s Rachel Cahill, along with Stephen Prendiville and Dr Debbie Hopkins, took part in a panel discussion at the Institute of International Education on how Ireland can develop transport systems that meet current needs and anticipate future demands, while aligning infrastructure investment with economic and environmental priorities. 🚈 The panel reflected on TII’s contribution to the development of our transport system, with Luas acting as not only a catalyst for economic development and unlocking housing delivery over the last 20 years, but also as a low carbon sustainable mode of transport. 🛣️ They also highlighted the significance of our national roads, as they allow for the safe movement of people and goods and are the backbone of the economy with 90% of interurban freight carried on our national roads.

  • 👏 Congratulations to Coláiste Lorcáin for winning the eFlow STAR award at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) earlier this month! 🛣️ Their Educate to Decelerate project proves that speeding doesn’t save much time but increases deaths on road. Well done, we’re always excited to see what comes from Ireland’s next generation of innovators! ▶️ You can find more information about this project over on the EFlow website: https://lnkd.in/dgU9MUDg

  • 🟩 TII, working in conjunction with Louth County Council, recently funded asset management protection and renewal works on the Carlingford Lough Greenway. These works are part of TII’s ongoing commitment to improving the accessibility and sustainability of greenway infrastructure across Ireland. 🚲 The works included installing new fencing and gates, and improving the old, unsealed surfacing with a new sealed surface. The new surfacing has increased the accessibility of the greenway and TII were delighted to see Louth Disability Cycling Club use the route earlier this month for their inaugural spin.   👏 Compliments to Louth County Council for a well managed and delivered scheme.

  • 📣 TII were proud to partner and participate in the Annual Supply Chain Sustainability School summit this week in University College Dublin. Participation in this conference allows us to share knowledge and experiences with other sustainability professionals involved in the built environment, from small subcontractors to industry leaders. The School's focus on sustainability and environmental issues for the built environment, is very relevant to our organization, as the state body responsible for major roads, greenways and light rail projects.   🎓 Supply Chain Sustainability School (IE) is a new industry-supported resource that has been established to provide training, extend knowledge and support best practices on sustainability issues in the Irish built environment industry. With this year’s theme focusing on Driving Sustainability Through Partnership, the summit featured sessions across the Environmental, Social and Governance pillars.   ▶️ The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a FREE virtual learning platform around sustainability, with the aim to upskill those working within, or aspiring to work within, the built environment sector.
