Day 1 of World Space Week 🪐🛰️ World Space Week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA). The WSWA leads a global team of National Coordinators, who promote the celebration of World Space Week within their own countries. It consists of space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world in a common timeframe. Industry News: NASA Funds Groundbreaking Mission to Inspect Space Debris 🛰️ 'NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has awarded Starfish Space a $15 million contract to develop a mission aimed at inspecting defunct satellites and other space debris in low Earth orbit. The mission, known as the Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability (SSPICY), will use Starfish’s Otter spacecraft to approach and evaluate non-operational satellites, an essential step in addressing the growing issue of space debris. Scheduled for launch in 2026, the SSPICY mission is part of NASA’s broader effort to advance space sustainability and mitigate the risks posed by orbital debris.' Industry news - Commerce Department’s New Traffic Coordination System for Space Launches Initial Capabilities 🛰️ 'NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, announced that the initial phase of its Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) has begun delivering spaceflight safety services to a beta group of satellite operators. Today, for the first time, satellite operators are receiving basic space situational awareness (SSA) data and space traffic coordination (STC) services from the Commerce Department. Nine satellite operators – NOAA, Maxar, Telesat, Intelsat, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Planet Labs, Eutelsat OneWeb, Iridium, and the Aerospace Corporation – now receive validated safety notifications from TraCSS in the form of conjunction data messages (CDMs, alerts describing potential collisions). TraCSS will add satellite operators and provide more data and services as the program progresses.' Read the full release: https://lnkd.in/ecEdsZGm

Have you read it yet? ESA's Space Environment report states that both commercial and government stakeholder have a duty to prioritise space sustainability. 💡 'Active satellites must perform an increasing number of collision avoidance manoeuvres to dodge out of the way of other satellites and fragments of space debris.' 💡 'The adoption of space debris mitigation measures is slowly improving, but it is still not enough to stop the increase of the amount of space debris.' 💡 'Without further change, the collective behaviour of space-faring entities (private companies and national agencies) is unsustainable in the long term.' Take time to read the full report: https://lnkd.in/ei7qGYqv
