𝙽𝚘𝚒𝚜𝚎: 𝙰 𝙺𝚎𝚢 𝙲𝚑𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚎𝚗𝚐𝚎 𝚒𝚗 𝚄𝚛𝚋𝚊𝚗 𝙰𝚒𝚛 𝙼𝚘𝚋𝚒𝚕𝚒𝚝𝚢 𝑵𝒐𝒊𝒔𝒆 is just one of the many technical hurdles in #UAM, but overcoming it is critical to the successful integration of eVTOLs into our cities. As #eVTOLs operate at altitudes between 𝟑𝟎𝟎-𝟔𝟎𝟎𝐦, they introduce new sound dynamics that existing noise standards- designed for commercial aircraft near airports- do not fully account for. Unlike traditional aircraft, which primarily generate noise during takeoff 🛫 and landing 🛬 , eVTOLs will navigate low-altitude urban environments, potentially causing disturbances at 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 in their routes. The Federal Aviation Administration and EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency are diligently working with private players within the #UAM market to establish guidelines for the certification of these eVTOLs 📜 . Most of the #UAM aircraft designs feature a 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐃𝐄𝐏) system with multiple motors integrated across the aircraft. In some cases, rotors tilt during the transition between flight phases. In these designs, the 𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 is the dominant noise source, which is further complicated by the noise from the surrounding urban environment 🌆. That said, significant research is underway to develop 𝐧𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 for eVTOL aircraft. Some of these strategies have been highlighted in the slides below. With ongoing advancements, we're on the path to making #UAM quieter and more sustainable.
