Urbanization in Tamil Nadu: Nearly 48% of the state's population resides in urban areas, and this number is set to grow. Rapid urbanization calls for innovative and sustainable urban planning. Need for Green & Liveable Cities: Liveable and green cities not only improve quality of life but also attract investments, talent, and economic growth. Government’s Visionary Leadership: Under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu has taken significant steps toward sustainability, climate resilience, and enhancing urban liveability. CII Godrej Green Business Centre has taken up the study on “Green and Liveable Cities in Tamil Nadu” to assesses the current status of Tamil Nadu’s cities based on Green & Liveability indicators and provides actionable recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders. As part of the study, #IGBC has shortlisted 6 cities in Tamil Nadu (population over 10 lakh), and evaluated the cities based on National Institute of Urban Affairs National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) Liveable Cities Standards and CII - Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Cities Rating, using publicly available data. Data has been studied benchmarking Tamil Nadu cities against top-performing Indian and international cities, with improvement targets on following 9 Major aspects - Green and Public Open Spaces Transportation and Mobility Power Supply Assured Water Supply Air Pollution Control Waste Water Management Solid Waste Management Urban Heat Island Urban Flooding The study serves as a roadmap to accelerate sustainable urban development across the state, ensuring our cities are well-equipped for a greener, more inclusive and future-ready.
