In hospitals and healthcare facilities worldwide, one of the most effective measures for preventing the spread of infections is often overlooked- handwashing. A simple and low-cost intervention, handwashing is vital for safeguarding patient and healthcare workers’ safety. A staggering 70% of Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) could be avoided through proper hand hygiene practices. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 10 hospitalized patients globally contracts an HAI. In low-and-middle-income countries, this risk increases significantly, with 15% of hospitalized patients being affected by HAIs, particularly in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). This Global Handwashing Day, GLC4HSR calls for a renewed commitment to reinforcing handwashing protocols in healthcare settings. By integrating proper hand hygiene into routine clinical practice, we can significantly reduce infections like MRSA, C. diff, and norovirus, leading to extended hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and even loss of life. #GlobalHandwashingDay #InfectionPrevention #PatientSafety #HandHygiene #HAIs

As we observe World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change and there is a lesser-discussed consequence: mental health. The psychological toll of climate change is profound, with rising anxiety, depression, and trauma experienced by communities facing environmental disasters, displacement, and uncertainty. The nexus of climate change and mental health is clear- climate resilience must include mental health preparedness. By building resilient health systems that prioritize both mental and physical well-being, we can safeguard populations against the cascading effects of environmental crises. We invite you to revisit our webinar on the intersection of climate change and mental health from last year: https://lnkd.in/gx9Q_T9e #ClimateChange #MentalHealth #HealthSystemsResilience #MentalWellbeing #MentalHealthMatters #HealthSystems #PublicHealth

We are delighted to share that our research, “A scoping review of health systems resilience assessment frameworks” has been published in PLOS Global Public Health Journal, a journal dedicated to advancing global health equity by publishing open-access research that addresses critical issues such as health systems resilience, infectious diseases, and public health preparedness, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The study has been co-authored by ACCESS Health members Sushma Marita Dsouza Dr.Shrikant Kalaskar MEHNAZ KABEER Latika Rewaria Dr. N. Krishna Reddy Maulik Chokshi and former members Anuradha Katyal and Sreemeena Satyanarayana. The HSRA tool, developed by the GLC4HSR Secretariat - ACCESS Health International - is designed to provide a structured framework to assess health systems' resilience across different contexts and regions. It integrates key components like governance, financing, human resources, and service delivery, aiming to help policymakers and healthcare providers identify gaps and optimize responses during crises. This tool has been designed as a step towards building stronger, more adaptable health systems worldwide. #HealthSystemsResilience #PublicHealthResearch #HealthEquity #GlobalHealth #HealthSystems

On this #WorldPharmacistDay, we celebrate the indispensable role of pharmacists in strengthening the global healthcare continuum and pharmaceutical supply chain. Pharmacists serve as the final checkpoint in ensuring that essential medicines, after traveling through complex global supply chains, reach patients safely and effectively. Their role goes beyond dispensing medication - they manage therapy outcomes, provide counseling, and act as key health educators in communities worldwide. In low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), pharmacists are often the most accessible healthcare professionals, offering critical services that extend far beyond the pharmacy counter. The World Health Organization estimates that over 80% of pharmacists in these regions contribute directly to patient care, counseling on disease prevention, proper medication use, and lifestyle changes. Moreover, during public health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists have been vital in maintaining continuity of care and ensuring access to health care even in the face of disrupted supply chains. A resilient health system cannot thrive without a robust pharmaceutical care framework. Pharmacists bridge the gap between primary providers and patients, ensuring that communities - especially in low-resource settings - have access to safe, effective, and affordable medications. Their role is essential not only for day-to-day healthcare provision but also in fortifying the health system's response to crises, public health emergencies, and disease outbreaks. #Pharmacists #HealthcareContinuum #SupplyChainResilience #HealthSystems #AccessToMedicines #HealthProvision #HealthcareProviders

Globally, unsafe care costs up to $1.6 trillion annually due to inefficiencies and harm. Adverse events are responsible for 1 in 10 hospitalizations in high-income countries and up to 1 in 4 in lower-income settings. Yet, when health systems share best practices and collaborate, patient safety outcomes can improve by 30%. This is a necessary reminder for the global health systems on this World Patient Safety Day. Proactive action has been shown to significantly improve the outcomes and conditions for patients. For example, cross-sector initiatives in countries that adopted the World Health Organization's Global Patient Safety Challenges led to dramatic improvements in safe care delivery. Collaborative learning accelerates these gains, enabling systems to anticipate risks and protect patients before harm occurs. #WorldPatientSafetyDay #PatientSafety #CollaborativeLearning #KnowledgeSharing #PatientCenteredCare #HealthcareSafety #CrossSectorCollaboration #PatientCare

As we continue to observe World Water Week, we take a second to highlight the critical role of water in enhancing health systems' resilience, especially as climate change intensifies. Water is not merely a basic necessity; it is foundational to public health and the efficiency of healthcare delivery. In healthcare facilities, access to clean water is essential for infection prevention and control, safe patient care, and the management of waterborne diseases. As climate change disrupts water availability, it exacerbates health risks, particularly in vulnerable regions. To build resilient health systems, we must integrate climate-resilient water management strategies. This includes investing in infrastructure that can withstand climate-induced disruptions and ensuring sustainable and equitable access to water resources. The intersection of water and health is crucial, and safeguarding this resource is imperative for a future-proof health system. At Global Learning Collaborative for Health Systems Resilience, we are committed to driving the dialogue on climate change’s role in health systems resilience. #WaterSecurity #GlobalHealth #WaterForHealth #InfectionControl #WaterManagement #PublicHealth #WaterAndSanitation #ClimateResilience #HealthcareInfrastructure #SDG6
