We are excited to announce the release of our latest report: "Building a Climate for Peace: Climate Security in South Asia", in collaboration with adelphi Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany Climate Diplomacy and Security: https://lnkd.in/drXrBEp7 🔵 This report delves into the relationship between climate uncertainty and diverse aspects of risks in South Asia, one of the world's most diverse and climate-vulnerable regions. Some key highlights: The report examines how climate uncertainty, combined with South Asia's varied geography, rich biodiversity, and complex socio-economic makeup, creates an interconnected web of risks for the region. 🔵 It presents four future climate fragility risk scenarios focusing on: 1. Water, Weather and Economies 2. Ecosystems and Territories  3. Non-economic Loss and Damage 4. Human Migration and Displacement  These scenarios illustrate the interconnected nature of climate risks in South Asia. 🔵 The report emphasises the need to reinvigorate regional institutions and build cooperation through disaster risk management to effectively address climate challenges, and highlights the importance of unifying South Asia's voice in global multilateral mechanisms to better address climate concerns.

Our 🆕 report "Building a Climate for Peace: Climate Security in South Asia", explores how climate security risks in the region are interconnected. Using four future climate fragility risk scenarios on water, ecosystems and territories, non-economic loss and damage, and human migration and displacement, the report illustrates the interconnectedness of these risks. Finally, it considers possible avenues for future policy initiatives, arguing for reinvigorating regional institutions, building cooperation and trust through disaster risk management, and unifying a regional voice in global multilateral mechanisms. A collaboration by adelphi and Kubernein Initiative, the report and its recommendations are a culmination of an intensive process of desk research, expert interviews as well as a virtual and in-person consultative workshop. The publication builds on existing knowledge and expertise to bring in new perspectives, connect seemingly disparate issues and offer actionable ideas in a region that has been disconnected for far too long. Great to attend India Circular Economy Forum 2024 by International Council for Circular Economy on behalf of Kubernein Initiative ! #Circularity in resource utilisation advocates for reuse and recycling in a way that minimises wastage. A linear model of economic development is no longer sustainable and therefore alternative, innovative ways should be adopted in major economic processes around us. While circular economy and its applications cover a large scope, I was involved in discussions on urban #water management, wastewater treatment, MSMEs in a circular economy, and sustainability of #defence supply chains. Some brilliant panelists and great organisers! Amazing to connect with Nitin Bassi Ramveer Tanwar (PondMan) Pankaj Arora RAHUL KULSHRESHTHA Neha Vyas Ravinder Dahiya among others. An editorial in the Indian Express today highlights that a rising number of women are joining the labour force. A large section of these women remain engaged in informal work or are self-employed. This is important news because it confirms yet again, that in countries with growing populations such as ours, women can contribute in a much bigger way to prosperity and progress IF there are adequate paths for them to join and remain in the workforce.   Gender must, therefore, be a strong consideration across all initiatives relating to financing and development to ensure that our systems are accounting for women to be more actively involved in the progress of our nations. For example, a large-scale infrastructure project such as public transportation system needs a gender lens in the designing stage so that woman who are entering the workforce utilize it effectively.   This was one of many important points of discussion last week at the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Feminist Foreign Policy hosted by the Government of Mexico. Where, on behalf of Kubernein Initiative, I had the honor of speaking on the panel ‘Empowering Tomorrow: Integrating Feminist Foreign Policy and Gender Perspectives into Sustainable Development and Financing for an Equitable Future’.   The conference was attended by a diverse group of countries from across continents. My most important take away was that all these countries were considering the inclusion of gender perspectives in various areas- finance, global governance, digital and AI, Science, technology, etc. This group had countries with explicit Feminist Foreign Policies,  as well as those that included gender mainstreaming in their external outlook and policies even in the absence of a formal FFP. And so, I continue to have hope for the work that we do! A big shout out and thank you to Gobierno de México, Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores de México, Ambassador Graciela Gómez García and her team, Feminist Foreign Policy Collaborative, Hivos and the fantastic group of Country Representatives and members of civil society gathered to take the actions forward.

Kubernein is excited to be a knowledge partner for Tabreed India to work on sustainable cooling solutions for our cities. Some insights from our workshop last week: 🔵 The panel below, ft Priyanka Bhide, Anson Sando, and Dr Pradheeps Muthulingam explored how cooling fits within the state ecosystem, noting ongoing efforts and upcoming measures for transitioning to better cooling alternatives. 🔵 Success in District Cooling requires a unified approach involving the state, private sector, urban planners, and financers. It's about cohesive action, awareness, and thorough assessment. 🔵 While policies promoting environmentally sustainable cooling are crucial, equal focus must be on making these options economically viable for large-scale commercial adoption. Cooling is no longer a luxury in India; it is a necessity. REVOLVE | GIZ India | Ambika Vishwanath Akash Sahu Aadhya S.

Cooling India’s Cities – Tamil Nadu is taking the lead 🌡️📈 India's cities are heating up. The extreme heat in summers is one of the biggest challenges for the local government in #TamilNadu, especially in the rapidly growing urban areas. In the state capital #Chennai, cooling alone consumes more than 50 per cent of energy consumption ❄️ ⚡️ To tackle this issue, we have joined hands with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (ऊर्जा दक्षता ब्यूरो) and Tabreed India. We jointly organised a regional workshop on ‘Cooling India’s Cities’ that focused on strategies for integrating district cooling and energy solutions into Tamil Nadu's urban planning. Key discussion points: 💡 Understanding the chances and limitations of District Cooling Systems (DCS): Case studies on greenfield projects and brownfield developments were shared to illustrate DC’s feasibility in the state. 📖 Mapping the policy and practice ecosystem: Discussions revolved around the opportunities and challenges in the current ecosystem and the need for a long-term vision for sustainable cooling solutions. 🧑🏼🤝🧑🏻 Building networks: The workshop fostered collaboration among government officials, utilities, private sector leaders, developers and researchers, all aimed at promoting innovative, flexible district cooling solutions. The workshop marks a significant step towards integrating district cooling and energy solutions into Tamil Nadu's urban planning, addressing both the environmental and economic impacts of urban heat. The project’s activities support the Indo-German cooperation agenda for achieving the global climate targets through enhancing energy efficient cooling systems. Together with our partners, we contribute to the objectives of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (#GSDP) between #India and #Germany which highlights the importance of a Green Energy Transition. Every year, like clockwork, the #monsoon season descends upon #India, transforming major cities like #Mumbai, #Delhi #NCR into war zones of chaos and frustration. The lack of effective city planning and administrative preparedness for rains and the blistering #summers that precede them is a glaring failure that demands immediate attention. But then, who is listening ? This civic mess is not due to nature’s fury alone. Despite decades of research and warnings by the scientific community, cities remain woefully unprepared The perennial floods and civic apathy are not just natural phenomena but reflections of our systemic indifference. Ambika Vishwanath & I write that true progress is measured by proactive governance, not by reactive responses to predictable crises. https://lnkd.in/duKt2NjU #rains #monsoon #Climate #climaterisks #urbanisation #urbanplanning #urbangovernance #flooding #cities #India #ecology #FPJOpinion Kubernein Initiative
