With more than 1 million voters with disabilities in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, the upcoming elections are a crucial moment to ensure inclusion and accessibility. Despite these numbers, persons with disabilities often face barriers that hinder their process to cast their votes. As a part of our #MeraVoteMeraBharat elections campaign, we urge the government and electoral bodies to ensure that every polling station is accessible and their voting experience is free of obstacles. We are here to listen! Share your grievances and experiences with us so we can work together to ensure a hassle-free, accessible voting process for all persons with disabilities. In a society that prides itself on progress and justice, how is it that our most vulnerable citizens remain invisible within the very systems designed to protect them? When it comes to crimes against persons with disabilities, the absence of disaggregated data is not just an oversight—it's a reflection of a broader systemic failure. How can we address injustices that we don't even quantify? The lack of specific section for disabilities in FIRs reveals a troubling gap in our approach to law enforcement and crime reporting. While the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) lacks comprehensive and clear data on crimes committed against persons with disability. In states like Haryana, for any and every FIR it is compulsory to mention the disability, whether visible or invisible. Chaitanya's findings during NCPEDP - Javed Abidi Fellowship on Disability helped in bringing about this crucial change. Chaitanya Mukund is taking efforts to address such systemic issues. By spotlighting the inadequacies in current crime reporting mechanisms, his work seeks to catalyse change, advocating for the integration of detailed disability data. Despite Assam’s inclusion of persons with disabilities (PwDs) under the Orunodoi scheme, the financial aid of Rs 1,250 per month is simply not enough. As our Executive Director Arman Ali points out, living with a disability comes with additional expenses that most people don’t have to face. From mobility aids and specialized healthcare to accessibility in transportation and daily living, every aspect of life for a PwD costs more. Without a disability-friendly environment and adequate financial support, persons with disabilities are forced to spend significantly more on basic necessities, money that many simply don't have. The state must act now to increase financial aid, ensure access to healthcare, and build inclusive infrastructure as mandated by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. In a world where leprosy is treatable and preventable, why are thousands in India still denied dignity and basic human rights? Despite being eliminated as a public health problem, the stigma surrounding leprosy persists, pushing entire families into isolation. In fact, India alone accounts for more than 60% of the world’s new cases each year, yet fewer than half of those affected are aware of the social security benefits available to them. NCPEDP - Javed Abidi Fellowship on Disability's fellow BALRAM GHOSHAL, is not just working on statistics—he’s tackling the real-life consequences of this neglect. His work raises an uncomfortable question: Why, in an age of progress, do we still allow diseases like leprosy to create invisible walls of discrimination? Through his outreach and advocacy, Balram is shining a light on the systemic barriers that keep leprosy-affected individuals marginalised—from lack of awareness to delayed access to benefits like healthcare and pensions. His journey reminds us that policies on paper mean nothing unless they reach the people who need them most. Leprosy continues to impact over 200,000 people globally each year, with India contributing to more than 60% of new cases. At NCPEDP, we believe in breaking down the barriers of stigma and misinformation. BALRAM GHOSHAL, one of our Javed Abidi Fellows, is tackling issues head-on by advocating for leprosy-affected individuals. We are thankful to Nikita Sarah Singh from The Leprosy Mission Trust India for mentoring Balram throughout his journey. Balram’s efforts to bridge the gap for leprosy-affected communities highlight a broader reality—persons with disabilities across India face similar hurdles in accessing healthcare, despite their rights under schemes like Ayushman Bharat. Whether due to a lack of information, bureaucratic barriers, or systemic neglect, too many are left without the support they need. We need to address these gaps. Have you or someone you know struggled to access healthcare due to disability? Share your story through our survey and help us advocate for real change. Together, we can ensure that healthcare is a right, not a privilege, for every person, including those with disabilities. Should physical barriers dictate the limits of a child's education? In a world where knowledge should be accessible to all, why are so many schools still a maze of obstacles for students with disabilities?
