When Push Comes To Shove! As part of a larger culture change journey, we recently designed and facilitated a workshop with senior leaders from a development sector organization. When the discussion shifted to how we can truly cascade and create culture change, we introduced an exercise called "When Push Comes to Shove." We asked participants to form a line, placing their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. The goal given to the group was simple: push hard enough so that the person in front of the line was pressed against the wall. What do you think happened—and why? Driving culture change can feel like a monumental task. Have you ever felt that it is hard to reach every person in your organization? What has been your experience, and what approaches have worked for you? #CultureChange #Leadership #OrganizationalDevelopment #vyaktitva #HRTransformation #CultureShift Sampark Sachdeva Sohini Bhattacharya Nayana Chowdhury Arjun Shekhar Gagan Adlakha Venkatesh (venki) Iyer Manjiri Bahadur Shubhra Bhattacharya Smita Bhandari Sahay Meenu Venkateswaran Salil Srivastava Parth Suri Promila Ayyangar Indrajit SenManisha .. Systems being expert | Author | Designing learning & leadership journeys across sectors

What’s the difference between systems thinking and systems being? In a recent intervention that we did with the Aditya Birla Group learning centre at Gyanodya Mumbai, this was the question we posed to their learning and talent bcoe members. The audience analysis told us that the participants, all senior professionals in the change game, needed to upgrade to their 2.0 selves and make real change happen inside and outside the classroom. So placing learning and talent management into the heart of the system meant they would have to learn how to transform the system such that talent potential gets unleashed. But for that the self needed to be transformed as well. They had to upgrade their own potential. We supported them through deep reflection inspired by exercises and experience sharing by us and the head of their bcoe, who was there all through the 3 day kick off workshop as leader in residence. Through group work and cluster coaching on a live org change challenges they had brought into the journey, they realized that they themselves needed to discover their own 2.0 system within. The system needed a new purpose, goals, values, processes and structures just like the system outside and that’s how they realized that both are joined at the hip - self and society. Hence system being - feeling (rather than only diagnosing), sensing (not just analyzing), and embodying or living ( not only solutioning) - is how self and the talent they wanted to nurture coukd be enabled to reach its potential. As the world became their classroom, the conflict was resolved and the self melded into reality…

"Recently, I had the opportunity to shadow Smita Bhandari Sahay, one of our most seasoned facilitators at Vyaktitva, during a leadership workshop to unleash the power of #collaboration Smita has led numerous sessions over the years, and watching her live in action was an incredible experience. Observing how she managed seasoned leaders while engaging all participants was a profound #learning opportunity. What made the shadowing experience so effective? 1️⃣ Detailed note-taking: I documented every step extensively, including our #AppreciativeInquiry interactions 2️⃣ Co-facilitating: I led a small session which gave me first-hand experience and the opportunity to seek #feedback 3️⃣ Continuous #reflections: We reflected together during breaks and post-workshop. Shadowing is an invaluable tool during the learning phase of acquiring any professional skill. It accelerates the integration process and ensures a smoother transition into any new role or career." - Salil Srivastava ----------------------------------------------------- Welcome into Team Vyaktitva, Salil Srivastava! "Having led business roles all through my career, I joined Vyaktitva to be an #OD interventionist and a #LeadershipCoach. Initially, I was completely closed to the idea of being a facilitator. It took me a while to see that facilitating group sessions was integral to my chosen path. This realization was daunting and a huge mental block for me. Fortunately, I had access to some of the best #InstructionalDesigners and #Facilitators, like Venkatesh (venki) Iyer, Gagan Adlakha and Chitra Chaturvedi. I volunteered to attend every possible design and training session, watching, observing, and taking furious notes. Despite my efforts, I often felt inadequate. I vividly remember freezing midway through my first-ever training session. My co-facilitator, unaware of my fear, interrupted with a humorous line. I later told him I could have punched him for disrupting my prepared spiel. That was many eons ago. Now, I enjoy training and coaching as it gives me a chance to not just share my knowledge but #learn from participants and coachees.  Some of my most fundamental learnings have been: 1️⃣ Prepare, prepare, prepare: Deeply study the frameworks, models, and theories being handled in the session. 2️⃣ Follow the robust design: Stick to the ID and the session will succeed. 3️⃣ Set up the session well: Thoughtful preparation is key. 4️⃣ Respect your audience: Treat them as intelligent individuals. Don’t try too hard to impress; they can sense nervousness. 5️⃣ Use silences effectively: Don’t rush to fill silent spaces. Give participants time to reflect and articulate their thoughts. And finally, hold it light while holding it right, but not too tight." 🙂 - Promila Ayyangar ----------------------------------------------------- If you'd like to learn more from the rich and diverse experience of Promila and more of our Vyaktis, please post your questions here or DM us. "When I first ventured into the world of designing and facilitating #learning and #LeadershipTransformation journeys, I faced a series of challenges that seemed overwhelming at the time. Early on, I found myself defaulting to a ‘telling’ mode of #training. My sessions were more about imparting knowledge than engaging participants in meaningful dialogues. This approach came naturally to me, but I felt it didn’t always resonate with the learners’ needs so much. Moreover, having trained mostly internal teams for over 3 decades, the thought of facilitating sessions for external clients was intimidating. The fear of judgment and the pressure to deliver effectively added to my apprehension. To navigate these challenges, I embarked on a personal transformative #LearningJourney. Here are a few things that helped me greatly: 1️⃣ Learning from the Best: I started by shadowing some of the most experienced facilitators at Vyaktitva. Observing their techniques and styles gave me invaluable insights into engaging participants and managing the dynamics of emergent facilitation. 2️⃣ Investing in Education: I immersed myself in Vyaktitva's flagship #BTID program. These were not just theoretical classes but hands-on experiences where I could #design mock sessions, facilitate activities, and delve into relevant frameworks. 3️⃣ Collaborative Practice: Before taking the plunge into independent #facilitation, I co-designed and co-facilitated sessions with seasoned colleagues. This provided a #SafeSpace to experiment, receive feedback, and build my confidence. 4️⃣ Embracing Feedback: Regular feedback from clients and internal mentors became a cornerstone of my development. Through this, I learned to alter and refine my approach, unlearn old ways, and learn/relearn new concepts and methodologies. Each of these steps was a building block in my journey from feeling hesitant and judged to becoming a more confident and impactful #facilitator. The process taught me that overcoming challenges is not just about personal growth but also about contributing to our collective strength at Vyaktitva. Today, I’m grateful for those early struggles because they set me on a path of #ContinuousImprovement and learning. Here’s to the ongoing adventure of learning, unlearning, and re-learning! 🥂 🔟 Ten years now with Vyaktitva and still counting." - Indrajit Sen --------------------------------- If you'd like to learn more from the rich and diverse experience of Indrajit and more of our Vyaktis, please post your questions here or DM us.
